Hypothyroidism could absolutely 100% speed it up. I lost half my hair in a year because of hypothyroidism. It was diffusing all over my head. Thyroid hormones help growth hormone work, which helps ur hair grow. Low thyroid also slows down DNA replication and it slows down your basal metabolic rate, making you gain weight and fatigued all the time. Thankfully with medication it's growing back. I'm still a Norwood 2 though
i wonder if my hair loss is being sped up because of thyroid problems
my last blood test about a year ago my tsh came back 3.89 (0.27 - 4.20).
at the time they said everything was normal, in range etc. but i read something recently saying how really once you go past 3 you have a problem.
do you think this could have accelerated my hairloss?
i remember a few years ago when i was first treating my hairloss i was speaking to my local Doctor about possible thryoid problems. he said my bloods were normal back then too, and also i had normal hair loss pattern (receding hairline and crown), so its was just normal male pattern baldness. if it was a thyroid problem my hair would be diffusing all over.
was this bullshit?
im pretty sure my hairloss comes from my mums side. (dad side has good hair). my mums dad has the same pattern of loss as me but im much more aggressive. all of my close male relatives have good hair. im far more aggressive than any of them. i only accepted my hairloss because i just presumed my hair loss gene came from somelse else in my mums family, like her dads brother or father etc
but it is possible my hairloss has been so aggressive because of my thyroid? i have no free or t4 numbers, just tsh
to give some back ground info, i noticed density thinning when i was 18, then gradual loss at hairline and crown for the next 10 years. im 29 now and around nw4/5. i took finasteride a couple years ago with good success, got my back to nw2/3. but quit due to bad sides. i also responded well to minoxidil.
