Technically, there should be no non-responders because every single one of us has the capability to heal wounds. Some may respond better than others of course but my point is those who don’t “respond” probably aren’t doing it correctly

Nicely put. I really hope :)

How do you guys clean your heads before dermarolling?

Wash with usual shampoo, then I take an alcohol wipe, soak it with extra alcohol, and I rub the needling area with it. Others use a spray bottle, which I also plan to do in the future.

I don't like the term dermarolling. It literally means skin+rolling. It does not mention needling which is what the procedure is about. I don't like inaccurate words

I don't know what to say about the chinese study though. Maybe the chinese govt, which has a strong grip on research as sole provider of funds, is interested in delegitimising west-dominated big pharma.

We can’t really make a judgment off people who say I dermarolled and it didn’t work, that might be the case but have they been doing it 2mm with a pen weekly and stuck to the routine, also have they added minoxidil, I really think the pen is the game changer in all of this, conpared to how I rolled when I was just using a dermaroller, I’m sure I wound 100 x more effienctly with a pen

Yeah but the study was replicated in China over a longer time frame and here is the pic of the guy's brother in law on whom this thread is based on.

I do not question any of the studies at all, I still think they provide good evidence for now and that we should add this regimen as an important component of the arsenal to nuke male pattern baldness. I also don't question the reddit guy who inspired this thread, but his brother in law..... Those pictures ... This lack of rigour for taking before and after pics pisses me off. Why are the after pics (conveniently) darker? We all know that at least there should be a decent comparability while providing visual evidence. Come on!
This does not necessarily mean his results are not legit, but guys, please let's raise our standards for visual evidence

I have my doubts that the device per se is the game changer here. I suspect it might have to do with time. We have evidenced how people back then, and even recently, are incredibly impatient. Combine impatience and a high expectancy of miraculous results in a short time, and you'll have a bunch of fools quitting in a few months, even when they get vellus hairs that are regarded as "no results". This gets even worse when you add low pain tolerance to the mix.
Perhaps the effect of the device is more indirect. Dermaroller seems to be less tolerated because it causes more pain, so that can contribute to people being less likely to be consistent and more likely to quit and trash talk about the procedure. The pen is way less painful, according to the anecdotes of many. That might raise motivation, commitment and positivity.

Anybody more knowledgable than me be able to do a comparasin between needling + minoxidil and finastride at 6 months from both the studies?

Would be interesting to see how they compare

If you read the old derma rolling thread there is so much negativity, no wonder nobody stuck to it, people like that whitepolarbear who just slates absolutely anything apart from a hair transplant, if I was reading that thread now I probably wouldn’t have started needling, it’s only when this helpful thread started that’s made me want to

To counterbalance the enthusiasm and possible delusion: here for you a pessimistic thread from 2014

They allege that the supervisor of the [indian?] study was running a dermarolling clinic at the time.

They mention some failures.
But, for unexplained reasons, the thread was closed for comments after only reaching two pages

https://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/threads/is-the-dermarolling-bandwagon-over.77447/

there are some different studies about wounding. from dermarolling to electrodynamic needling and some more advanced tool(wounding by laser, hot pulse etc and other dermabrasion. these studies come from different countries. So I dare to say the science behind wounding is quite solid. Also don't forget follica is working on wounding for a while (+topical). we have already seen legit results from established members. that said Lately, I was just looking at some thread talking about dermaroller. I'm quite chocked tbh. I believe there are some people who try to regrow hairs where they never had hairs, and where they will never have hairs even with the more powerfull drug. actually some appear to have a normal looking hairline and don't seem to have male pattern baldness... So don't take all testimonies for granted. just try by yourself and stick to your routine and you will know for sure what it does. ; )

That is why I am glad this guy is gone. He had the kind of personality that stupid people like to follow.

A question for people on here. Do you call micro black hair 'vellus' ? (1/10th of a millimeter probably)
"micro hair" yes. Black, no. Vellus hair are not pigmented. If you see a very small hair with black color (pigmented), it probably means it's a bit beyond the "Vellus" stage.

To add to your point, I think scientific studies, particularly double blinded peer reviewed ones should be the primary source when deciding which treatment to opt for.

Having said that, I’ve found a couple of similar studies backing this wounding thing.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29952106

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29103820 AA not Androgenetic Alopecia, but this is a highly reputable journal

Anyway, there’s a few more similar articles when you search the key terms https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Microneedling+hair

Hopefully this becomes the future direction of hair loss treatment as it is less invasive and cheaper than stuff like transplants.

Lol..Dr Cotsarelis, if you are reading this, hurry up and figure out how this follicular neogenesis stuff if you haven’t already. Just hope follica is substantially better than mere needling.

I think Follica is looking for 100% response rate

I’m not sure what they are looking for.. they’ve had quite a few delays, and the word I’ve been hearing on this forum is that their treatment is merely wounding and minoxidil. I just wish they were a lot more transparent.

Another interesting thing I found is this:
https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03491267

I made a thread on this earlier on this year, so I won’t talk about it further as I don’t want to hijack this thread. Interesting thing to note is Luis Garza published research alongside cotsarelis, however his research I’ve linked above is expected to be completed in 2025.. why would he bother to even do the trial if follica is going to commercialise soon?
