How's your physique status now David?

Transitioning from skinnyfat to just skinny.

I just had surgery, so in principle I can start weightlifting in April. The trauma of being injured though was a bit much, so I think I might start with a period of functional training and yoga, to build nerves, balance, flexibility, coordination, etc rather than muscle.

Nice hopefully you can bump up that intensity in April! I have just started to train more seriously. I severely reduced my alcohol intake and I'm taking my diet more seriously now. Really helps, feeling stronger than ever.

Physique wise I want to go to where I have never been before. I basically want to reach close to my genetic potential. I don't want to get ripped but just "lean".

In the gym I always set short term goals to increase the total poundage.

You?

To get as cut as possible prior to mid-April, when I can start lifting again. Might do two days a week of fasting until then.

I'd like to see a six pack on myself, and it, a chiseled jaw and cheekbones. It's a good base from where to start bulking.

I did a one-day "fast" yesterday though I had ~150 calories around dinner: 1 cup of soy milk, one cup of kombucha. I had a cold so I was freezing all day, it sucked. My mouth tastes like metal right now, an indicator of ketosis but somehow not one I've experienced often.

If you do a three day water fast then by the third day youre in ketosis. If you continue a diet with less than 20grams of net carbs a day for your body will stay in ketosis. If you do that for two weeks or a month its a great fat burner if weightloss is the ultimate goal. Just break the fast lightly. Its hard to not eat carbs thou. If a bowl of broccoli has 20 carbs and 15 carbs from fiber then thats only 5 net carbs so veggies are good for a keto diet.

Anti-inflammatory mechanism of dieting and fasting revealed

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have found that a compound produced by the body when dieting or fasting can block a part of the immune system involved in several inflammatory disorders such as type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

In their study, published in the Feb. 16 online issue of Nature Medicine, the researchers described how the compound β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) directly inhibits NLRP3, which is part of a complex set of proteins called the inflammasome. The inflammasome drives the inflammatory response in several disorders including autoimmune diseases, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, and autoinflammatory disorders.

“These findings are important because endogenous metabolites like BHB that block the NLRP3 inflammasome could be relevant against many inflammatory diseases, including those where there are mutations in the NLRP3 genes,” said Vishwa Deep Dixit, professor in the Section of Comparative Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

BHB is a metabolite produced by the body in response to fasting, high-intensity exercise, caloric restriction, or consumption of the low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet. Dixit said it is well known that fasting and calorie restriction reduces inflammation in the body, but it was unclear how immune cells adapt to reduced availability of glucose and if they can respond to metabolites produced from fat oxidation.

Working with mice and human immune cells, Dixit and colleagues focused on how macrophages — specialized immune cells that produce inflammation — respond when exposed to ketone bodies and whether that impacts the inflammasone complex.

The team introduced BHB to mouse models of inflammatory diseases caused by NLP3. They found that this reduced inflammation, and that inflammation was also reduced when the mice were given a ketogenic diet, which elevates the levels of BHB in the bloodstream.

“Our results suggest that the endogenous metabolites like BHB that are produced during low-carb dieting, fasting, or high-intensity exercise can lower the NLRP3 inflammasome,” said Dixit.

I did eat around ~500 calories. First I had some of those echinacea/honey candies throughout the day to help with a cough. Second, around 800pm I had a glass of warm milk and 1.5 slices of banana bread. Worst foods to eat on a fast lol but whatever.

The only thing I ate yesterday was cough syrup (pretty sweet), other medicines, a 2-egg omelette at dinner with cheese, nuts, and spicy vegetables/olives. Approximately ~500 calories.

Weight is stalling during this otherwise good run of alternate-day fasting, which suggests that I'm overdue for a whoosh.
