Masturbation and DHT

Ever consider the idea that bald men don't get laid as often and resort to jerking off, and so people start thinking that masturbation causes baldness? Remember, correlation versus causation.

Anyway, I'm done with this stupid argument. I think most people know my and the scientific community's viewpoint so I'm not even going to bother. For those that believe that masturbation causes baldness, just stop choking the chicken. And for the rest of us, keep pullin' it. End of story.

I guess if you're going to discuss this theory you should ask, "Does ejaculation cause hair loss?" rather than, "Does masturbation cause hair loss?" I have no idea, but here's how they MIGHT be linked.

Testosterone is necessary for the production of sperm. Cells in the testes (interstitial cells or leydig cells) produce testosterone and secrete it. We know that testosterone is responsible for secondart sexual characteristics (like pubic hair), but it's also needed for the production of sperm. Sperm is also produced by cells in the testes (sustentacular cells or sertoli cells).

I'm sorry, the next bit is a little hard to explain unless you are familiar with hormones and endocrinology. If I could show you a diagram it would be easier. Basically though, most hormones in the body are regulated by the hypothalamus. It releases a hormone called GnRH. This flows to the Anterior Pituitary gland which in turn releases two hormones: LH and FSH. Think of it like a flow diagram:

Hypothalamus--> GnRH---------> Ant. Pit.------> LH
|
|--->FSH

OK. LH travels through the blood and reaches the interstitial cells. LH is the signal for these cells to produce testosterone. They won't do it unless the hormone LH activates them.

LH------> Interstitial cells---------> testosterone

As I mentioned above, testosterone then helps produce sperm.

FSH on the other hand acts on the Sertoli cells, encouraging them to produce sperm. They will not produce sperm unless activated by FSH (and of course they need testosterone as well).

FSH------> Sertoli cells--------> Sperm
^
Testosterone-----------|

Now, here's the relevant bit, finally. When Sertoli cells are active and producing a lot of sperm, they send out another hormone called Inhibin. Inhibin travels back to the anterior pituitary and decreases the production of FSH. So basically, when sperm levels are high, your body slows down the production of sperm.
Since you're producing less sperm, you now have some extra testosterone (because it's not being used to produce sperm anymore). When concentrations of testosterone are high, the hypothalamus can sense this and it decreases the amount of GnRH it releases. If you follow the flow diagram, this means both less LH and FSH. So, FHS levels are way down and now LH levels are down as well. This leads to decreased production of testosterone (because there is less LH to activate the intertitial cells that produce testosterone).

So overall, when levels of sperm are high, testosterone production is lower. We don't need as much because we're not producing sperm. When sperm is low (after we ejaculate), we need more testosterone to aid in the production of new sperm. So, it could be said that ejaculation leads to higher testosterone levels. It could be that high testosterone levels lead to increased DHT levels...

As far as I know this hasn't been studied in detail and I'm certainly not saying that ejaculation causes hair loss. There is no question though that testosterone is linked to sperm levels and production. What this means in terms of hair loss I have no idea. Sorry for this being so long, but I hope it helps.

I'm sorry, my diagrams didn't format properly. In the first one, FSH should be coming out of the Ant. Pit. In the final one, testosterone should be pointing to the sertoli cells. Sorry for the mix up.

Guest's post gave me a headache. Ah, well... I guess i'll just go beat off like a rabid monkey and count the shed hairs in the wet spot.

Love having another thing to wonder and worry about.

However, for completely unrelated reasons, I've decided to go an entire week without "manipulation". I'm on the third day so far. By tommorow, it will be the longest in 8 years (since I was 14) that I've ever refrained from it.

I have more will power than I thought. I watched the entire orgy scene in Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" on HBO last night without scratching the itch. (Though a teacher of mine thinks that scene is the opposite of erotic. He kind of has a point, if any of you guys have seen that movie.)

Thanks for your post, Guest.

I am very familiar with endrocrinology and especially reproductive endocrinology. All the past research shows, and you mention, that testosterone is the main protagonist to spermatogenesis, DHT is NOT. DHT is only somewhat indicated when T levels are low.

Testosterone levels are not the concern here. You "guess" that higher T levels lead to higher DHT levels. Remember that most of us on this forum are on finasteride. Also remember that testosterone levels also rise when you're playing a sport, thinking about sex, looking at a girl, etc. Should one confine themselves up in box?

Finally, these little spurts of testosterone output will not significantly alter DHT output to cause hair loss. The follicle requires significant exposure to DHT to die. Even if you masturbate everyday, with finasteride your DHT production is significantly curtailed -- miniscule ups and downs will not matter in the long run.

Just think rationally guys.

I personally feel that not masturbating increases hair loss. It causes an increase in testosterone which can as a result cause increased DHT production. Pretty simple.

Masturbating reduces Testosterone does it not?

You're quite right Drinkrum. I'm sorry if I made that bit at the end sound too much like fact. I just wanted to point out that there is a link between Testosterone levels and ejaculation. The conclusion at the end was just speculation.

Thing is we are looking at the wrong thing...why is there not articles saying that having sex increases hairloss and not just masturbation..cause they are the same thing

Exactly.

Ejaculation is ejaculation.

Sorry, but the basic premise is flawed.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the protagonist of this thread is claiming the following logic:

You masturbate, and lose testosterone. Body increases production of testosterone to compensate. Thus, increase in testosterone increases hairloss.

The flaw in this theory is that when you masturbate, you are NOT spuging testosterone! You are spuging sperm (living cellular organisms), water, and sugars. When you masturbate, you are not 'losing' any testosterone so why would your body need to increase production of it to compensate?

I will just end this all by saying....when in DOUBT whip it out

Examples

Teacher: Rock what is the answer to number 4
Rock: (Quizical look) Whips out his penis

Vince Mcmahon: Rock are you going to wrestle at wrestlmania XXI?
Rock: (Not sure of the answer) Whips out his penis

So if we can all just take a second to realize what the answer to all our problems are, we would realize that whipping it out solves all. Thank You
