Nope, it still makes no sense

Skinny-Fat
Is that like shorty-tall or hairy-bald, maybe richie-poor? :)

iwhat it means is that you're not overweight, but you have a high body fat percentage. there are guys, especially guys like athlees, some of whom are technically overweight, but have low body fat %'s.

Which is why the BMI is such outdated BS.

Athletes fail the body mass index test because they have a much higher % of muscle than normal standards and muscle is infact heavier than fat.

I always fail the BMI. They do free weight and blood screanings at my work every year, and this year I'll be categorized as obese.

I agree. Why don't they get rid of that test? They should go by height to waist ratio. Even that would let fat-skinny people pass. they need a test that looks at height, waist, and weight. Unless someone is hour glass shaped and fat, that test should have the info needed to calculate body fat percentage.

BMI isn't bad.... just the people who take the measurement too literarily. But it's not meant as some sort of absolute rule, but a guideline.

The guideline is based on people's measurements taken from 1830 - 1850. We're taller now, eat more reguarly, don't suffer from malnutrition, and probably have better bone density than those living back then...Don't have as many intestinal parasites, or don't have parasites etc.

Oops, I lied, my BMI is 27.5, still only overweight. Darn...I'll try harder next year. :) Though depending on if I decide to compete in the <220 or <242 class this November, that may not happen.

Yes, I have visited Wikipedia and other sources on occasion as well. It's helps to flesh out an argument. :) Still, the only true problem with BMI is doctor's abuse of it as a tool, one of many. Otherwise, it makes for a good general guideline for the average person, not a rule set in stone.

Obviously, BMI wouldn't account for the greater preponderance of lean muscle mass in a weightlifter such as yourself , or older patients who lack muscle mass... that's just common sense. For everyone else in-between it can be an adequate guide. Although, most well-read doctors will currently opt for determining mass index by measuring waist-to-hip ratio -- a lot more predictive. Science now mostly realizes that fat stored in the belly can be the most dangerous type.

True - I thought BMI was conceived in the 1930's during the depression...But it's always helpful to double check before you leap when stating dates. :) Same arguement, different century. lol

hey, jayman, if you really want to lose weight fast, and don't mind risking death, just get 3 hours of sleep every night. It will mess up your health, but you'll lose weight a lot faster. Probably mostly muscle though.

thanks for the tip but this seems to be working. i lost another half a pound as of today. so that puts me near 15 total i think. i was soo hungry last night for some reason. like normally the ephedrine/caffeine kills my appetite, but for some reason, last night, i could feel it. oh well.

I like how this was worded. Especially the part about not minding the risk of death. That sounds very encouraging.

you lose weight for a little bit, then get diabetes and get fat and your nerves get damaged and then you need limbs amputated. so i guess minus the limbs you should have lost quite a good bit of weight.

I know many people that only sleep 4 hours per night and have done so for decades. They're all in perfect health...Though, they are all older (60+).

It doesn't.

Many times crash dieters gain back all the weight they lost, plus a lot more once they come off their diet. Fat people are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes. If you let your diabetes get out of control, you can lose limbs. (It happened on Grey's Anatomy 2 weeks ago). :)

should have been more clear. the no sleep part. less sleep heightens insulin resistance.

sounds like a cushy job...

Your tax $$ at work. :)

haha i hope fairtaxnow doesn't find this thread. :)

Found!!! Maybe not my tax dollars unless he's a federal employee.

I found this topic pretty comical up until now when I decided to post to let you know I found the tax comment, lol. You would think you're certain to die from your weight loss regimen from reading all these comments.

I did pretty much the same thing fall of last year to lose my first 10-15lbs and then I slowly upped the calories but always kept them healthy. I always incorporated healthy fats like coconut and olive oil though so my calories probably ranged from 800-1000 for those first 10-15lbs I lost. Not sure where you're at, but I've done this before too, I hope to finally stay in shape at this point.

I too got to the point where I had to stop losing fat and start gaining muscle, hence a few of my posts in this forum a little bit back. I'm probably right now where you will be probably be at later this summer if you keep with it. Once you start running then you will really see the results.
