    Hi there,
I haven't really posted on here before. I tried generic finasteride for about 2 years. Didn't seem to do anything for me. I dropped it last Jan/Feb. I decided I'd give regaine a try. A last roll of the dice as I thought putting something on your head twice a day is a lot of hassle (which it is). Have been applying 5% twice a day since end of January. I was initially using the foam but found most went on the hair not on the scalp. I switched to the liquid and that is much easier to use. I do seem to be noticing my hair is looking a little fuller and people have commented. Now I'm sceptical so I take it with a pinch of salt for now. It could be that I'm styling my hair differently too but we'll see. Either way it may be starting to turn around. I'm just wondering would it be worth getting back on finasteride as well now that the minoxidil seems to be working? Or is it just the case it doesn't work for some people. Also, maybe I shouldn't mess with something that now seems to be working (minoxidil alone)? Any thoughts much appreciated.

No problem dudes. I will likely update in another 6 months as I just decided to add dutasteride as well.

There's just no way to know unless you try. I can tell you I saw no change after 4 months finasteride. Only after adding minoxidil did I start getting new hair. I've continued finasteride but I have no idea if it's doing anything!

Anyone using finasteride can get a blood test to check dht level and determine whether or not it is working as intended. If you were using finasteride for as long as two years and didn’t even achieve maintenance you should consider trying it one more time and within 3 weeks get your blood tested. If dht levels are still within normal range or higher you are not a responder and should (assuming you aren’t already getting nasty side effects) consider moving on to dutasteride. Finasteride is known to increase the benefits of minoxidil and vise versa.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking that maybe I should try finasteride again now that I'm seeing some results from min. Seem to read a lot that people don't keep their gains long term on min alone. Maybe like you say the two together can provide the combo of growing, thickening and then finasteride keeps DHT at bay.

That’s the idea. People that want to keep minoxidil gains get on finasteride and people that have maintenance on finasteride use minoxidil for regrowth. As they say you will have to find some way to address the hormonal issue or eventually your hairloss will catch up. I wish you good luck.

Here is my update as promised. I've been taking Dutasteride 0.5mg every day instead of Finasteride for about 4.5 months. Overall I'd say my hair quality got a little better. I think I'm seeing some new vellusy hairs at the corners of my hairline. No crazy miracles compared to finasteride so far. No side effects except for occasional increased libido. Overall I like dutasteride better than finasteride.

Here is an update photo, not much has changed since the last update, I just want to make myself feel a little better. Compared to my baseline photo from the previous page (5/30/17) you can see I have recovered a decent amount of hair (although in this photo I have minoxidil foam in as a styling product and that makes my hair look a LOT better).

So that's about a year and a half's progress? Brilliant. Thanks for posting. When you compare with your earlier photos it's amazing how much things have improved. You don't have any sides from dutasteride? I think what we can take from your story is that we have to be consistent, take photos and that progress won't happen overnight. Sometimes, when you see fast responders you think everyone should be the same and as per your OP, you feel like giving up long before allowing treatments to take effect. Slow and steady can get there too. Your point about photos is good too as I find going by the mirror is torture isn't it? One day you're convinced your hair's worse than ever. The next day you think it's really improved! Nuts.

Yes a bit over 1.5 years total. And YES I still go back and forth day to day when I look at myself in the mirror...sometimes it looks like mid\front of my scalp has recovered to the point where you can't tell I'm bald, other days it just looks awful. My hair is still VERY thin but comparing to my baseline photos I guess I have to be pretty happy with the progress I've made. And no I have ZERO negative sides after 1 year+ of finasteride and now 4 months+ of dutasteride. Only minor sides from finasteride\dutasteride are INCREASED libido. Other than that it's like taking a sugar pill. To be clear though, it seems like 90% of my recovery is due to Minoxidil.

One additional thing about perception regarding recovery.

Obviously by my first post, I couldn't tell from the mirror or even photos that I was getting better. But the first clue was when I'd catch the outline of my head in the reflection of random things like say the glass door of my microwave. I used to be able to clearly see the outline of the back\middle of my scalp in the reflection. After a few months I stopped being able to see that anymore.

It's a nightmare isn't it? It's so hard to be objective. You can either fool yourself into thinking you've got loads of hair or conversely despair at the baldness. Lighting makes a massive difference too. My hair is still quite thin under strong lighting. However, in softer light it doesn't look too bad. I'm gonna start taking biotin tablets to help my hair grow faster and hopefully thicker.

Something I forgot to mention. Either the minoxidil or anti-androgens is making my hair, beard, and nails grow a lot faster! Like crazy fast!

I kept the photos small on purpose. I notice that photos from this board sometimes turn up on Google image search. I'm not comfortable with big photos of my head being that visible on the internet. Sorry. Happy to answer any questions though.

Fair enough. I can understand that. I would have liked to scrutinise them a bit more! My hair is looking a bit like your last pic. I like your story because I think it's quite a realistic one. As per previous post, the super-responders can be a bit hard to relate to. Yours has been slow steady progress so is something I could see working for many. I had a comment yesterday from a colleague saying I seemed to have more hair!! She's been eyeing my hair suspiciously for a while. That's gotta be a good sign eh? :)
