Working With a Design–Build Team: What Should Homeowners Expect From the First Consultation?

I’m meeting with a design–build team next week for the first time, and honestly I’m not sure what that first consultation is supposed to feel like. I’ve only done smaller DIY projects before, nothing major, and now that we’re talking about reworking the whole downstairs layout, I’m a bit nervous about saying the wrong thing or not bringing enough info. If anyone here has gone through that first meeting, what should I expect? Do they dive into details right away or mostly just listen and try to understand how we live in the space?

From my experience, that first consultation is usually more of a long conversation than a “meeting,” if that makes sense. They’ll ask you about how you use each room, what annoys you on a daily basis, and what you imagine could make your routines easier or nicer. When I met with the team for our kitchen remodel, I thought I had to present some polished vision board, but they were actually more interested in hearing about the problems we kept running into — things like the awkward corner cabinets, the way the fridge blocked the walkway, or how we kept tripping over the dog bowls. They also walked through the house with us and pointed out things I never noticed, like how changing one wall would open sight lines to the backyard. If you want a reference to how they typically structure that first conversation, you can take a look at luxxremodel, since their process page described almost exactly what happened with us. Nothing salesy, just a chance to get on the same page and see whether the working style fits both sides. Don’t stress about “saying the wrong thing.” Just be honest about how you live and what bothers you — that’s what they build from.

Jumping in to say our first consultation felt pretty similar — very low-pressure, mostly talking through habits and frustrations rather than picking materials or anything like that. I remember thinking afterward that it felt more like therapy for my house than a formal design meeting. So if the vibe leans conversational, that’s normal.
