I'm looking for a laptop..If you guys have some experience on this what do you recommend?
I read that mac performance is better and its more secure, though I want to play games too sometimes...
What do you advise? :dunno:

One reason Mac is so much more secure is because its used a lot less numbers wise.

I have had 4 windows based PC's and 1 Mac. I loved my Mac but I got so sick of forcing it to work with the rest of the applications out there.

My current Laptop is 18 months old and runs like a dream. I take care of it by running anti virus and anti spy ware once a week and staying the hell away from Internet Explorer.

Well, I spose I could make a partition and install windows there for the applications that require it. What concerns me about mac is the price...Anyone else has an opinion?

I use both and they both perform really well. If I was using a computer for work I would choose a Mac, I like their interface and they just don't crash as often.

However you mention using it for gaming, therefore, a PC is more advantageous.

I agree with Cassin when he says stay the hell away from Internet Explorer.

I hate internet explorer. Unless you have all the latest updates, it keeps closing every 10 web pages or something. Firefox is good right out of the box.

Cassin, why do you have so many computers!! Are they all always on? Do you swivel around from computer to computer?

I know lots of people who are perfectly happy with IE, but some of us that do heavy surfing can't handle it.

I personally prefer firefox, it's more stable, can handle 100s of tabs (you don't need 100s but sometimes I have more than 10 tabs open), it has less security holes (many MS supporters debate the opposite).

Let's put it this way, mozilla is a company specialised in making browsers, whereas MS is an OS company. When making IE, MS will always have other ideas and priorities that are not necessarily in the advantage of the end-user.

Whenever I HAVE TO use IE, it takes me literally 2 mins to crash it. I open a main window, jump into another tab, then check my emails on another tab, sports news on another tab, etc and IE is frozen... It just doesn't work for me.

Whenever I see an interesting link, rather than stopping doing whatever I am doing, I send the link to a new tab so that I don't forget that there is a link I'd like to read. When I'm done in the current tab, I have the other link open and ready to be read. That's how I surf and IE can't handle multiple tabs in the same way firefox does.

I personally prefer a PC because it's cheaper and I use linux for work. You have to keep in mind that the new generation Macs are pretty much identical to PCs, hardware wise there is no difference, apart from the price tag. Despite being identical, Mac supporters state that the hardware build quality is better than the generic PC. I'm not so sure how an identical hardware can have better build quality in one box and not in the other.

Basically, if I was to run linux on Mac, I'd be paying almost twice as much for the same specs. It just doesn't add up for me.

To play games, you can have a Mac with dual boot or a virtual machine.

I'm actually tempted to get an Asus Eee. That would be like downgrading (?), they are small and less powerful but extremely mobile. My local shop has an Acer One (similar to Eee) in stock for £190.

I made it sound like I don't like Macs... All I have to say is that you have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself. Some people that switch to Mac from PC never go back.

He's saying "he has had" :)

I used to work on 3 computers at the same time testing some code and stuff. It's not as hard as you think it is. It takes a bit of getting used to. One of the computers was a very old computer that I used only for testing and nothing else, the other two were my main computers that I kept synched so that I could work on either.

I can't remember the last time my PC ever crashed on me. If it actually HAS ever crashed, I don't remember the occasion, that's how long ago it was. And I _do_ use multiple tabs sometimes. Not as many as 10 or so like you described in this post, but a few. I'm baffled as to why your machine would crash so easily, and I'm glad I don't have that problem. I continue to be a happy user of Internet Explorer, which is the only browser I use.

My machine doesn't crash... I never said Windows crashes, I like XP, I don't have a problem with XP.... What I said was if I do heavy surfing, IE freezes/crashes.

Thanks guys! :)
I really have to narrow down the possiblities and choose a few that suit me best, I wont be spending some 1500 euros on something without being certain of its capabilities.
What I just dont get is why are the macs so much expensive than pcs with similar features!!
You'd think that Mac wants to convert clients so the prices would be similar....paying extra 500 euros on a laptop just to have the increased safety of macs is absurd.

No thats how many I have been through....I used to be pretty hard on them.

Now I take care of my laptop and since I just use it for the internet & chess this thing will last me forever.

If it works for you, it works for you. I have used IE on old machines at freezes and I have used it on new machines and it freezes. There seems to be many security risks with it, mainly because its prone to more attacks because it is the most used browser.

I admit though it does seem clearer to view. My personal preference is firefox and I don't know a huge amount of IT techies who would recommend IE ahead of it.

I stay the hell away from it.

I have owned both and Mac is worth the extra money because its simple and everything you plug into it works smoothly. If you are going to make an investment, I would definitely pay 500 dollars more for a Mac in a heartbeat. Right now, I am on PC(windows) computer because I got it FREE but I would never buy one. So I use both everyday and I prefer my Mac over this computer but it was free so I mine as well use it. However, I use Safari as my browser on my windows based computer because it makes me feel like am I using a Mac. I do have windows installed on my mac, so you get the best of both and you can do windows and mac programs at the same time with parallels. Mac is definitely hands down the winner. Once you go Mac, you won't go Back.

I did...Mac to me simply wasn't worth the extra money and I got so sick of trying to fit a square down a round whole getting everything to work.

Mac is great but it way over rated.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Over rated? Probably true but still enjoy using a Mac regardless of its price. I am sure Bill Gates would definitely agree with you, Cassin. I would definitely recommend trying both of them out if you can find someone who has a Mac. Get a demonstration and see what it will do for you. If you are not impressed, stay with the PC(windows). My mom who never knew alot about computers had both and loves the Mac way better than the PC.
