Shaved my Head -- then started Propecia - 3 Month Update

Hello, I've scoured the board pretty good the last couple weeks. I just realized I was thinning. I was told by a hairdresser a couple years ago, but I figured she was just trying to sell me the thickening shampoo. Well, I looked with a handmirror under a sun light and noticed the thinning in the crown. My hairline isn't bad, but I see some recession on one side in particular -- perhaps because the way I used to comb it?? perhaps a cowlick (sp?)? or are uneven sides common?

Well, I just decided to buzz it - but I decided it looked worse -- I then noticed some diffusing across the vertex. Then I just said F--- it, and shaved it all the way down. I think that's the way to go -- just shave it, the look is becoming pretty popular, very modern. Luckily I have a decent shaped head. So far, I've been told I look like that old magnetic toy where you move the iron shavings around a face w/ a magnet, Billy Corgan, and Hunter S. Thompson (w/ a shaved head). I work in a highly competive corporate environment, so adjusting w/ 270 impressions was the biggest struggle. Everyone has to say something, right? A lot of "whys," perhaps because I had the appearence of a great head of hair unless you stood over the top under light.. I'm 6'1", so not that many people would catch it.

Anyway -- started Propecia on AUG 27th, 1 mg, and will likely continue. I'm a little concerned about the acne side effect, as I've been prone (and still am) to break outs. I'm wearing BP 10% mixed w/ lotion at night to minimize bacterial activity.

Well, now to the benefit of the shaved head while on finasteride --. Shed's, won't see them. 2ndly, I will be able to monitor progress a little easier by letting my hair grow out a week or so, then looking, versus looking every day. I want to get some pics going, but just moved and need to find my camera.

wish me luck,

fromchicago.

Good luck mate, sounds like you still have a decent amount of hair and a healthy attitude. Get on the nizoral shampoo twice a week as well for maximum benefit, it will help the scalp and has stimulant properties. Give the proscar 12 months to work and come back here and update us all!

Yeah agreed a shaved head makes applying golden and u can check the progress more easily, I added nizoral shampoo into the mix a month later but ive been using it 3x a week and it makes a nice difference too the quality and fluffness of my hair, perhaps even given it a chance to regrow !

So best too stick too good ole 3 combo

Well, I have to admit the healthy attitude isn't entirely there yet, but managing none the less. The complete shave was a reaction to my discomfort w/ the fact -- I had to see what I looked like in my ultimate fate -- not too shabby I might add. Of course, like I said everyone has a comment. They've ranged from HIV patient to "love it" and "looking sharp." A lot of "what the f***'s" too.

But get this, after I shave my head, a bud at my job did the same thing -- didn't really inquire w/ me, just did it. He was also just thinning a little. And a couple days later a balding acquaintance did the even shave all around -- cut the scruff off the sides.

But the shave is empowering, everyone should give it a shot. Now, I'd love for the propecia to halt the problem, but I think I can live w/ myself eitherway. These are the tests of life -- can you accept the yin and the yang? the humility and confidence? you can't have one w/o the other... and it's really a personal self image issue we're all dealing w. If you like person you see, or furthermore and more importantly the person you ARE, then you'll come off as that person to others.

Like I said, I'm still not 100% there w/ the acceptence. I've gotten some cool derby caps that I'm having fun accessorizing w/ though. But I go out w/o a hat too. Think I'm just going to keep a tan year 'round as well.

Also, there's serious momentum in the head shaving world. I live on a somewhat busy street, and they're everywhere.. More everyday.

When you say shave, do you mean with a razor? Or more like a really short buzz cut like the guy in prison break? Who has great hair by the way.

best of luck.

Keep it shaved and add nizoral for 2-3 times a week. finasteride works best at the back and that is where you seem to have the thinning so I think you have a great chance of regrowth + thickening

Re: Shaved my Head -- then started Propecia

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm actually having a really down day. Just woke up in the dumps or something. Feeling ugly if you know what I mean. I called a girl on Friday -- a girl I met right after I shaved my head, and I thought we hit it off (this was about 2 weeks ago). She seemed to be into me at the time. Well, it's been 2 days and no call back. I hate for rejection to bother me so much, but I was using this chick as a guage to my new "shaved" look in a sense. Oh well.

Re: Shaved my Head -- then started Propecia

yesterday was a good day -- i love the cold rain, feels good on a bald head. got a tan, then worked out. then went out on the 5 story deck in my building and just let it pour on me.

but today, the new found cold weather is making me want to grow out my hair again. I'm not looking forward to the akward in between stage though.

shaving my head created a ulimate vision for me. I now feel like I have been there and can come back any time w/o that feeling of unknown -- ie 'what's it going to look like.'

we'll see

i probably shouldn't have said awkward, but you know what I mean -- the length where it just kinda pops off your head.

I'd also like to apologize for using this thread/site as my blog, but I find it therapeutic in a way

Good man, your now tackling DHT and inflammation, just need to stay on the log now mate and ride the storm...if in the future you feel you need regrowth/*or some more regrowth, then hit the minoxidil, kirkland is cheap and reliable.

If you want this to be your log add some photos when you can, you get more responses from people with their opinions and so forth. Also easier to chart your progress :)

I hope to have a pic by the one month mark. I'm growing my hair out little by little, periodically buzzing to even out the length (some hairs grow faster than others). I've noticed that my forehead is more oily than usual. Any mental side effect is non existant at this point. Slightly decreased libido.

Re: Shaved my Head -- then started Propecia

Damn, I just realized I'm that guy, making excuses for not getting a pic up -- soo typical on a board like this. I swear -- can't find my camera since I've moved, got the charger though :dunno:

I'm going to my parents house next week, it might be over there.

Okay, so day 19 -- noticing some little tiny bumps along the hairline. I can't necessarily attribute that to the propecia or the nizoral I've added since last week. Buzzed my head just now w/o a guard -- no progress to report. I wouldn't be able to tell ya if I'm shedding because the hair is so short

Ok, humor me now -- looking closely at the top of my head, I see little dots where hair should be coming out of -- I figure this is a good sign that the follicle is still alive, but clogged/dormant, right? This is better than say a spot that is slick bald? Before I buzzed it, there were stray hairs that we of different lengths and kinda sloppy looking -- uneven growth, hence my reason to even things out. Growth on the sides appears even. I'd be happy to maintain and get some more growth from these little dots.

Re: Shaved my Head -- then started Propecia - PICS added pg 2

As far as side effects -- slight foggy depression the first week, mainly for a couple hours after taking the pill.

Increased appetite. Watery you know what.

The pics aren't the greatest because my hair is so short -- I think I'm going to slowly let it grow out, w/ periodic buzz cuts. to sum it up I have diffuse thinning in the crown and vertex. Hairline is pretty decent at this point, although the right side has receded a good 3/4 inch more than side shown above.

Thanks for the support. Helps to have anonymous people to bounce ideas off of.

hey chicago,
i think the buzz cut looks good on you. what are you, a nw0?? youre lucky as hell. you caught it early, and your hairline is still a juvenile one..

im gonna start propecia tomorrow i think. does the watery semen bother you? i know it sounds ridiculous and perverted, but i actually used to take pride when i was having sex with girls to bust like a pornstar and shoot up into her hair. the thought of it dribbling out just upsets me. wow, im getting graphic and wierd?. honestly, thats my only problem with propecia. If it wasnt for that side effect i would have no qualms about it

Thanks, I'm happy with my hairline, just have thinning vertex and crown really. I'd be happy with maintenance, though I wouldn't mind some density.

And, no -- doesn't really bother me. Much bigger problems, ie job, mortgage, etc
