What exactly does Nizoral do other than treat dandruff? I am also looking for an answer to my question above about the best place to get Proscar and the difference, if any, from Propecia other that dosage size.

There are several mechanisms of Nizoral as I understand it. The main one is as an anti-inflamatory. Some believe it is also an anti-androgen, but I have seen that disputed.

Whatever, the research seems to stongly suggest that it works and adds to the effectiveness of finasteride and Minoxidil.

Finasteride is finasteride. The only diff is the name and dosage and what it is approved to treat. Buy Proscar and split it. You will save money.

As to where to get it, INET shopping will likely get you the best price. I buy mine at Costco.

"Generic" Propecia?

Merck has the patent on finasteride until Jan '05. At least that's what my consultant told me.

I don't think there is a generic version yet, so beware.

sheeeiiiit, my hair has taken a turn for the worst since tapering propecia dosage to .25mg. I don't care man, I'm gonna take 1mg propecia, with the sexual side effects and all. L arginine hopefully will help in that department. I'm only 25 damit.

ps. does the cold wether outside (I'm from Canada), make hair appear less volumous and stuff. aaarrrggg.

Yikes

Stick with Propecia for a while longer. Maybe the side effects will diminish.

I don't think weather is a big factor. Paul Mitchell makes a good product you can buy in the stores. It's called "The Cream." It's a conditioner you leave in after your hair is dry. It's a little crazy for a couple hours but your hair will settle down and look thicker.

Good luck.

NEED INFO! please...

i'm sure you'e all heard about the shedding/telogen effluvium (?) related to quite a lot of men who use propecia... honestly, this scares the ba-jebus out of me. not really interested in growing new hair... though it would be FANTASTIC if i did, but i'll be content to keep what i have now. it seems that propecia works really well in these kind of situations. however, i've never heard of it causing any shedding until i came to these forums. there were even some guys saying that even afetr they stopped using propecia, the shedding stayed with them and didn't reain the loss they encountred during the use of the drug.i thgouht propecia was suppose to help with hairloss and not CAUSE it! ANY info about this would be great, as well as personal experienes!!!

THANK YOU SOO MUCH!

Hello to you all,

This is the first 'hair-loss' forum I've registered with and I read your postings with much interest. Especially people who are currently taking Propecia and reporting their progress. Good on you!

I've been considering this product for a few months and need to obtain as much information as possible before I part with some hard earned cash.
I went to my doctor who was next to useless and couldn't offer any advice; I guess the NHS listing it as a cosmetic drug had something to do with it so the Doctor's not really to blame here.

I read some comments concerning the reduction of intake of Propecia with interest, i.e. reducing it from 1mg to 0.5. Food for thought indeed.

I'm 30 years old and still have a pretty much full head of hair although shedding at an alarming rate. Thinking that now is the time to take preventative action.

Have been told that Regaine is not as effective as the marketing claims. So have closed the door on that product.

Any tips/advice anyone could offer me before purchasing this treatment? Plus things not to do i.e. drinking heavily etc.

Is there anyone listed here who has perhaps taken Propecia and reaped the full benefits.

Thanks for your time people and good luck to those already taking the drug.

I have been on 1mg Propecia for just under 8 months now, its really has slowed down/eliminated most of the shedding...still get a few hairs when combing or sporatically showing up on my shoulders...but nothing drastic!

The massive shedding scares I used to read about and the sexual side effect made me drop Popecia after one week, that was last March...then I said f*ck it, I want to take whatever control I can over this uncontrollable situation and I got my Doctor to prescribe it for a year...the massive sheds are only to the very few and the loss of wood, less sperm....is also a very small proportion of the entire samples!

I feel like I am in a better place mentally, my hair seems to be doing well (cannot tell if I have re growth, but I would expect that to take 12-18 months...the veterans of these forums have stated multiple times that it takes great patience on propecia, things do NOT happen over night....give it a year minimum!

Losing hair is truly a reason why a lot of us get depressed, Propecia helps us see some light at the end of the tunnel...I would stay on it for the next 20 years if it really keeps on working well...

Shedding

I think it's possible that alot of guys start on Propecia right when their hair loss situation is getting really bad. They start shedding right when they start the medication.

There's no scientific reason why Propecia should cause hair loss, but I guess everyone is different so you never know.

Remember, correlation is not necessarily causation.

weird experience with propecia

hey guys,

i was on the drug for about 8 months but decided to stop due to shedding and overall thinning on top. nothing groundbreaking there. but i also noticed a rapid increase in miniaturization of the hairs in my forelock area...they got progressively lighter and finer throughout the course of my initial treatment. also: my scalp in the region (forelock), aside from being itchy, started to become kinda gummy too...almost as if i'd let moisturizer congeal into some membranous layer above the skin. combing my hair meant seeing a snowstorm of flakes at the hairline. i'd been using nizoral and t/gel, alternating with neutrogina no residue...anyone else notice this happening?

i had a pretty thick head of hair before i started and now there's really not much substance up top.

i got back on the drug about 2 months ago at the suggestion of a hairloss specialist in ny who said i had nothing to lose and that propecia can't irrevocably harm your hair. (when i stopped, i was hoping to see some regrowth after almost a year of shedding...i was off the drug for close to 4 months and the situation only got worse, though the shedding did abate considerably).

so im back on it now (at half a pill a day, also recommended by my Doctor) and all my side effects have started up again. i also have a decreased libido and watery semen. charming!

what's the deal here? should i maybe wait til i total a full year on the drug (both my first round of treatment and this one combined?) or did the time i stayed off it reverse any potential improvement it might have made? anyone have the kind of scalp condition i described?

i don't think im cosmetically noticeably yet...my girlfriend thinks i look the same, but when i get out of the shower it's really incredible how much hair i've lost in the past 12 months.

I did reduce my finasteride dosage to .25mg and I did notice an increase in diffuse thinning, (Hairlosstalk moderator did also). My sexual side effects were however decreased. I was perplexed. So after reading the discussion on L arginine I decided to give that a go, whilst increasing the dosage of finasteride back to 1mg. I thought it would be easier to maintain hair count while tinkering with ways to make jack happy again. You know, keep the follicules alive.... So it turns out that 4-5 days into L arginine supplementation I do notice an increase in sexual desire and preformence. I think L arginine is worth a try.

Gogetherray,

It is a good thing you got back on propecia as you were being hasty by stopping at the 8th month mark. Stick with it for a full year if you hair has gotten worse then obvious it doesn't work for you (but please believe me the finasteride was not the cause!).

As for counteracting the sexual side effects, I suggest you start taking arginine power 1000mg in the morning on an empty stomach. The benefits are two fold: 1. you should see an increase in libido and 2. This facilitates NO production which consequently is good for hair anyway.

Good Luck and Stay Positive Always.

propecia and getting the ladyfriend pregnant

I know this has probably been answered many times but I'm not sure.
I have been on propecia for 2 months. Lets say I'm with my girl and I get her pregnant. Could there be a problem? I remember hearing no but want to make double sure. thanks

A Propecia Story and Questions

Here is a Propecia success, abort, regroup story, for those interested in how other people have faired. A bit more info than I intended, but I covered some interesting (possible) side effects too.

I'm guessing I was one of the first people to start taking Propecia after it was approved. I think I was at my doctors office that day. I used to think about hairloss too much. There are simply too many other things in life to enjoy that your hair has nothing to do with.

Enough small talk. After using Propecia for about four or five months, I was not noticing any effect. I was still at the unrealistic phase of wishing and believing I could get my 17 year head of hair back. I was 27 yrs. old at the time.

My hair loss was just beginning to be noticeable to the outside world. Clearly receding hairline (M shape/shiny temples), and direct bright light with a close look from an investigative eye would make it pretty obvious. No bald spots. Lot's of hairs on the pillow (and behind the headboard). Plus, over the last several years I had started growing a few "wire like" curly hairs mixed in the crown. These things really had a mind of their own and simply did not belong on my head or even a wire brush.

Tried Rogaine for about a month but gave up. Too greasy, wanted too much too fast, and I was too vein (sp?) to wear my hair impaired from greesey residue.

Back to Propecia. After four or five months I got frustrated, and began doubling the dose. Still no side effects  , at least none that I noticed. Stopped thinking about it. Also stopped thinking about my hairloss for a while. I see now that was probably the first indication it started working.

Anyway, after about the one year marker, I realized I had a hard time convincing people that I was losing my hair. I did not have my 17 year old head of hair, but what I had was very solid with exception of the temples, which I think adds character anyway. No more shedding either. I almost even convinced myself my years of hairloss panick prior to starting Propecia may have just been an over exageration...maybe my hair was just going from boy to man.

After about 18 months, I found myself with a girlfriend I did not want to have sex with :? . Actually, I just did not really want to have sex much at all. Part of me thought maybe it was just because she was not the most sexually attractive girlfriend I'd had in a while. I had also started my own company, was making $0 salary, down from over $250K/yr, and was working 18 to 20 hrs/day, 7 days/wk from my apartment. Thought maybe that had something to do with it. After a couple weeks, I began getting more concerned. That sexual umph just was not there.

At about that time, my nuts started hurting, causing the little general to stay in an unusually strong retreat (actually looked smaller). At that point I scheduled the doctor appointment. Doctor did not tie the squeezed nut feeling to the Propecia (sorry about the lack of creativity there--I'm tired) and prescribed something else for that. He did tell me to get off Propecia if I was still worried about my sex life.

So after ~18 months, I quit. At this time, it was absolutely working without question. As I mentioned, hairloss had become a distant memory. Of course, 6 months after quitting Propecia, the shedding kicked in again. So I started using Rogaine. Its been a year and a half since that, and Rogaine did a fair job of "almost" stopping the hairloss until I wanted to find an Indian that could scalp me to stop the itching. I later learned it was the Propylene Glycol. But that's another story (fixed by Dr. Lee's products).

Somewhere up above in this story I mentioned I had not noticed any side effects until and other than the loss of libido and nut squeeze. However, a few interesing things did happen that I now think were probably side effects. For instance, at abou the one year mark, I had noticed what looked like cellulite 8O on my *** cheek. Trust me, I thought something was wrong with my mirror. At the time, I attributed it too not being able to work out after for 8 months b/c of a back injury. Prior to that, I had worked out for 10 years straight, 5 to 6 days a week to try to outgrow my skinny kid body--which I did successfully with the help of Creatine and massive eating. Several months later, it actually spread to the back of my legs, and I had started working out again.

I also noticed my nipples stuck out, sitting on top of little pyramids of fat. These were not the b**ch tits I've heard others talk of, and only I noticed, but they were definitely there. I also attributed this to not working out for several months after all that Creatine and weight gain. Remember, by now I was sitting on my *** 20 hours a day working. To this day I cannot say for certain that was another Propecia side effect, but it sounds like gynomastecia (sp?) to me.

Quitting Propecia went like this. Took about 2 - 4 weeks for nut pain to be gone for ever. Took 2 to 3 months to recover full sex drive (frustrating period of time). Recoverd! Took about 1 year to 1.5 years of working out again, and getting off the Creatine, massive food intake, lots of alcohol diet, but no fat around the nipples whatsoever, and no dimples or cellulite type looking skin on my legs or ***. THAT was NOT fun to have. Keep in mind I grew up as a 6'4" rail and fought to put on weight for years (eventually hit 235lbs before realizing it was possible to go too far the other way).

Anyway, I'm convinced no doctor fully understand Propecia, its side effects, and effects of dosage. I've heard so many different things from "they are probably not related" to "dosage makes no difference" to "dosage makes a difference", and more recently, "oh well, don't take it".

Anyway, I've decided to grow my hair longer after a long period of wearing it pretty short. In doing so, I've noticed I have not defied the hairloss curse. The light does not have to be so bright. In addition to that, I began to wonder how much of what I experienced truly was Propecia vs. stress and change in lifestyle vs. loss of ability to exercise along with aging etc. I also began to wonder if perhaps the side effects would have gone away on their own had I continue another 6 months, or if my double dosing might have had an impact.

Anyway, I've decided to give it a go again. This time one pill, once a day, same time of day every day. Also, my life is not as stressful anymore. I'm going to give it a few months, and may consider changing the dose if to .5mg / day if I get any trouble and trying that for a few more months.

Wish me luck, I have a feeling I've got about a 25% chance I won't get the side effects again. And let me know if any others of you experienced any of the gyno effects I think I might have. Have not seen anything about cellulite appearance.

Good luck to all. And by the way, if I not had those side effects, Propecia would definitely have been an incredible thing.

Hey man.. i posted about the stretch marks on the *** before and noone really had the same problem.. you're the first one i've seen!

What you've described coincides EXACTLY with what happened to me.

I took it for a period of 10 months and I had the sexual problems along with some flabiness and stretch marks on my *** cheeks that later spread to my upper legs.. when i got off the drug it took about 1-2 years for everything to go back to normal (or close to it)..

I've restarted the drug now and the problems have resurfaced.. I'm also getting pretty bloated in the face.. did that happen to you at all?

Either way, I've cut my dosage in half (from the original 1mg) and i'll keep everyone posted on how this goes..

*PLEASE* post back with what happens regarding the stretch marks etc.

Thanks.
