Several studies say it's 2%, however, personally, I really do doubt it. I remember one study where 7 out of 40 people got side effects, which corresponds to roughly 18%. Some people also claim that the fear of getting side effects raises the probability (placebo effect), which normally should be around 2%, but I don't know if this is true. To me it sounds logical that if you mess up with your hormones, sooner or later you will get side effects, it's a matter of time and those people who don't get side effects after taking finasteride for 10 years are really rare in my opinion, whereas those who get side effects after one year are rather the minority

Thank you for your reply. How about the stories of Finasteride ruining people's hairs? How true is that? Because any forum I read people say it made them worse it's only words, no pictures at all.

I'm not sure about that, I recommend you to read some threads here about people who got their hair ruined by finasteride, there's plenty of things to learn on this forum

All I can tell you is that sometimes people shed more than usual when they start taking finasteride and , usually, that's temporary and hair will grow back. So some people get scared and drop it and say that finasteride ruined their hair, when in fact all they had to do was to wait just a little bit more. Other people may have some sort of bad reaction to finasteride and experience an actual acceleration of their hair loss. This can result in a shed that lasts for more than 5 months. I have absolutely no clue why this happens to some people

Hey man, I'm one of those guys who's hair was made worse by finasteride, but there is a flipside. I uploaded pictures on here you can find it in my created posts. I was on finasteride for a year and only deteriorated at an alarming rate, so I jumped on oral minoxidil and got some nice regrowth.. So I figured that the oral minoxidil was working I should drop the finasteride because of how fast it was eating up my hairline.. One week after I started shedding hair noticeably and by 2 months off it I had lost all my regrowth and a years worth of hair. My hairloss went from 2x faster to 3x and I couldn't believe it ( I still can't) so as of 10 days I am back on finasteride and my shedding has not stopped. Before finasteride my hairloss was very slow, on it my hairloss was faster and once I got off it my hairloss was progressing extremely fast. Its too soon to tell if this time around it will slow it down. But as of right now I'm losing roughly 80 hairs showering and drying my hair, as opposed to about 10 when I was regrowing with the minoxidil. I'm also on topical estrogen for 2 weeks and no results yet.. finasteride CAN cause your hairloss to worsen, but once stopped it could progress even faster. I don't think it's as rare as its made out to be and its a mystery why it hasn't been officially recognised.

I honestly think these people lost hair despite finasteride, not because of it.

That said I believe the rate of side effects from finasteride is significantly higher than the 4% or whatever quoted. Most people tend to get some side effects even if they are relatively minor or go unrecognised for a while.

@AnxiousAndy, don't always equate shedding as a bad thing. It could mean you are responding well and eventually your hair will grow back thicker. Be patient and wait at least 6 months before you jump to any conclusions. I used to say all the time Propecia was making my hair worse. After 13 years on it, if that were true, I would be bald now. You know that is not true in my case.

Thanks for the reassurance Dr House. I will try to ignore the shedding, but it is discouraging to see alot of it on your hands in the shower and sink. I will try to keep my cool, I've put off a rant on the impact of hairloss section for a few days now incase things get better but it is tempting :D. Will stick consistently with treatments and reevaluate in 6 months. I would have to be damn unlucky to keep losing hair permanently on my regimen.. I may add in some oral estrogen too, at this point gyno and ED is the least of my worries haha.
