Hi peeps

I've attached a couple of pics of my current hairline just to gauge what you guys think. male pattern baldness runs in my family, think my brother started developing a bald patch around a similar time to my age now. I've noticed thinning at the sides years ago, maybe even as far back as school (12 years), but last summer I really noticed my hair starting to thin and for the first time it was happening in the middle of the front of my head.

I've known it's coming for a while and have tried to save some money for a transplant. Obviously that isn't my preferred option what with it being so expensive (cannot justify £18k or whatever it would be on that) and I also realise it's take years to go completely so I'd like to have a crack at keeping what I've currently got. I am prone to acne and have heard finasteride can be bad for that, so with my hair fast thinning I'm half tempted to just cut to the chase and get on propecia, which is what I understand to be the most effective treatment for keeping your current hair? I am slightly fearful that the shedding phase may leave me with a bald patch at the back of my head, but it's coming to the stage where I'm going to have to take that risk I think. Any advice would be welcome guys

I've attached pics to see what you think. I actually don't think these pics show how bad it is, I had a very thick head of hair but a lot of it seems to be going fast :

Whatever course of action you choose, keep in mind that there are very promising treatments on the horizon. Research Histogen, for example. It should be made available in Asia in 2013 and America in 2015.

I didn't know too much about histogen, sounds promising. That said we all know what things like this are like with dates and I (we) could end up waiting a lot longer. Regardless, I imagine I'll have lost a lot of hair by 2015. I'm currently reading up on propecia, my worry is it will speed up my balding process or the sides will be too bad. Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. Going to give it a couple of months then give it a go I think

Best username ever.

Cheers mate

Shedding is not your enemy. From your pictures I think that this risk is very remote to say the least. Shedding usually stops after a short time and stronger hair returns. If you really have male pattern baldness and don't do anything about it, you someday will wish you had taken the risk of some shedding...

Yea, that's what I'm thinking. Looks like it's bite the bullet time! Thanks for the advice mate. Can I ask why you think my chances of shedding are remote?

Also, propecia seems a little expensive. Would I be ok buying proscar and cutting it into quarters? I've read that some people struggle to cut proscar into quarters so cut it into halves instead and take it less regularly, which is ok apparently as proscar stays in the bloodstream for 72 hours? Does this sound about right? Would people recommend starting on a lower dose then upping it after a certain period of time?

Started taking proscar about 10 days or so ago. Started on 1 mg every other day for the first week and have now gone to 1.25mg every other day. Not sure whether to stay on this dosage for a bit or to go to 1mg every day

Okay, so I gradually built my proscar dosage up to 1mg every day. My hair loss seemed to slow down a few months back for a few months, but lately I've started losing it more again - it's noticeable that I'm losing more again when I run my hands through my head. Anyone know why this might be? Seems strange that it would seem to start working then suddenly stop after a short amount of time?
