Are you completely sure it wasn't a seasonal shed or something else? Also, I don't think it is the serum DHT that matters when it comes to hair loss, but rather the Type II DHT. The further reduction of serum DHT that you got on dutasteride is probably due to the Type 1 DHT that is being blocked.

I wonder if your shedded hair would have returned if you stayed on finasteride or gave it more time. However, it is good to know that you can always switch to dutasteride if you don't think finasteride is providing good results anymore.

Haven't check the forums in a while. Well Finasteride was only providing approx 70% type 2 reduction, yes this is essentially the only kind that matters as it is synthesized in the dermal pappila and acts as an autocrine hormone. Dutasteride is 3x as potent at inhibiting type 2 so usually the larger reduction is from type 2. I remember reading that finasteride at its best reduces type 2 by about 85-90%, however it you can fall anyhwere between 60-90% on that curve. Dutasteride inhibits 98-99% of type in in just about everyone. In my opinion this is why its so effective. Been about 7 months now and im still counting 0 hairs in the sink and shower. Its crazy how unnaturally good this drug is for some at stopping hairloss.

Any regrowth now?
Unfortunately no, while dutasteride appears to completely stop my hairloss I dont seem to respond with regrowth to antiandrogens. Sucks to beacuse my loss is rather minor and i thought for sure that minoxidil + dutasteride would bring me back to pre hairloss stage. I literally don't respond to minoxidil at all. I stopped it over 2 months ago after using it for maybe 5? No "dread shed" after quitting at all. I was expecting it to be huge because I was using 1.5 ml 2x a day EVERYDAY for 5 months. I'm really hoping histogen or something works because I'm not "happy" with my hair.

Shedding is a natural part of the hair cycle even for people who don't have hair loss. You can't judge if you're going bald or not by counting shedded hairs, unless you're shedding at an extremely high rate.

Also, I thought finasteride inhibits type 2 by 85-90% in everyone and that is only with one dose. After it builds up over time I thought it could even be higher inhibition than that. Either way dutasteride is good to have if finasteride doesn't work for you. The only thing I don't like about dutasteride is it unnecessarily inhibits type 1 and not all DHT is bad.

Did you only switch to dutasteride because you noticed increased shedding or did you actually notice your hair getting worse on finasteride?

Good info guys. I have a question regarding Medical Wellness Center. I pay my $50 consultating fee and get a yearly script for Avodart which I can use any pharmacy in the states to purchase?

Also, how much does Medical Well Center sell their Avodart for if you buy from them?

I get dizzy whenever I enter their web site I feel like I'm back in 2000 viewing a geocities site on my Netscape Navigator 6.0.

Good point there. I shed like crazy, always have. But my temples have thickened up so much.

Yes, you fill out questionnaire, pay the fee and they will mail you prescription or phone your pharmacy. Takes like four days to get in the mail..for me anyways. It's only good for six refills though.
Get the blinky health app and save yourself some money though cuz duta is some spensive chit.

Man I want to start dutasteride so bad, just too worried about potential side effects. I've been taking finasteride for 2.5 years with little to no success, but no side effects at all. I really want to try dutasteride, but I am concerned with the lack of data on its use for hair loss. Although there is a study showing its effectiveness, I haven't seen any study showing side effects for young men. Scares me that there isn't much known on the effects of inhibiting type I 5-ar, which is largely present in the brain. Hearing stories like this makes me want to take it all the more though.

Guys,

I can finally say that I have stopped my hair-loss. KABOOOM

AM I HAPPY? yes, bc it stopped of course... AM I THAT HAPPY? No. why? read on pls...

Used finasteride for a good YEAR, and it didn't do ****. Only thing it did was give me a bad shed all year long !!! I AM SURE. Actually my hair was better the first month i took it, but then the shed hit, and went on all year long (it did drop from time to time, but never ended).

Started Avodart 2,5 months ago. After ONLY 1 month of everyday use (0,5mg) my hair-loss stopped . . . . . . . . :dunno:

Now backed down to using Avodart 2 - 3 times a week, bc i simply don't want to use it everyday.

I really can't believe it actually. I don't lose any hairs anymore when showering ..... I can rub as much as i want, and maybe only 1 hair is found in my hands :s.

Before starting finasteride I never had a shed, I only had a slow recession at my temples (that was it!), when i started finasteride a good year ago my hair was sheding all year through, and the recession got worse !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ****ING finasteride !!!

i really can't get around it... finasteride made things worse for me, while it does the same as Avodart. (OKAAYY avodart is stronger, and inhibits 2 Iso forms)

I read SO much **** on these forums, god damn, and that kept me away from AVODART. Thing like stay away from dutasteride, it will cause more recession at the hairline, cause ED, cause wrinkles, cause this, cause that...... **** NOOO !!! **** NOO !!! My libido is still fine, din't get wrinkles, nothing at all.

I HATE ALL THOSE PEOPLE that said not to use it. IF I KNEW a year ago what Avodart does for me, then I would be a prefect Norwood 2 !!! **** this (yes Norwood 2 is perfect in my eyes !!! )

I'm sooo angry at those people, but so happy that Avodart does work. Really CAN't get my head around it that finasteride only made things worse......... pff.

BUT OKAY that's over now (can't turn back time), after 2,5 months on dutasteride i can safely say that my shedding has stopped, and I have regrown a lot of small tiny white hairs in the temple regions again. (but i think it is too late for them to grow out into terminal hairs). Thanks finasteride !!! thanks, yr my best friend. :))))

AND GUYS, I AM NOT going to answer any stupid questions about this topic. When I needed help, I never got good help on this forum, bc no one seemed to care :)) well i do care about you, that is why i'm giving this update. Sure some people helped me with my questions, but then then there were times when i really really needed advice and NO ONE gave me any :))). I can only say I got here on my own, not thanks to you guys. You know the feeling when 500 people look at your thread, and not 1 person gives advice or an answer... :))) it is really fun, knowing your hair is falling out and you need some reassurance or advice.

I only would like to thank the Administrator, and some guys that posted back to me over the past 15 months.

I am starting RU in a couple of months for sure. (tip for those who want to keep their hair for many years to come.)

Enough words.

Pictures please.

(long time reader- first time poster)
I noticed the quality of my hair deteriorating in my early 30's- which I incorrectly assumed was due to my diet. It never occurred to me that I could actually be balding since i'd always had such strong and thick hair- a visit to a specialist gave me the bad news which I honestly wasnt expecting at all.

My first attempt to combat it was with Rogaine which I used for about 1-2 weeks. The shedding though when it started was too much for me to bear so after consulting my specialist I started on 1mg finasteride a day. It definitely helped fight the hairloss and I used it continually for around 3 years. I dont know whether it started to lose effectiveness or just that hairloss continued albeit at a much slower rate (i do remember every shower i'd still have several hairs in my hand) but for whatever the reason last year I could perceive my hair density was slightly less.

I'd heard about Dutasteride but I was in 2 minds as i knew if I stuck to Finasteride i'm pretty sure that though my hair would continue to thin out, I would still retain a reasonable amount going forward. But when my supply of Finasteride almost finished I decided to give it a go- I thought it cant be any worse for my hair and if there are side effects i can always drop it and go back onto Finasteride.

I've now been on Dutasteride (Avodart) for 2-3 months. So far thankfully i've had no adverse side effects and I can also confirm that hairloss in the shower is much reduced (i noticed that about a week or 2 after using it). A few of those are the really thin/fine hair that the original poster also mentioned. I've a feeling these must have sprouted up across my head since i've been using Duta as some of the areas where I could sometimes see a bit of scalp, look better- but i cant say for sure as i've recently cut my hair a bit shorter than normal so I dont have a direct comparison. But one thing I can say for definite: less hair falling out = more hair on my head lol

So finally i'm happy to continue on Duta. I wont go as far as saying that I wished i'd just started on that instead of Finasteride. It was definitely worth checking to see if finasteride was adequate as its a much cheaper drug and less chance of side effects than Duta. Even if there isnt much noticable regrowth- I am fairly certain I will hold on to what i've got right now with Dutasteride and thats good enough for me.

Please, answer if anyone has info as to whether the avodart (dutasteride) in Korea has on their leaflet that it is treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

My apologies for reviving this old thread. However, anyone who is interested, dutasteride is still 100% haulting my hairloss. Side effects are minimal. Really only watery semen, although i'm still normal with those parameters. I'm not advocating this medication, i still think its over kill for most, but it has worked incredibly for me when finasteride just wasn't cutting it.

Hey thanks for your response dm900. I’ve been on finasteride for about 10 years and have considered the switch to dutasteride as I feel my hair has slowly thinned in a diffused pattern during that time (not drastic, but there has been a definite reduction in hair quality that I have noticed starting about 1 year ago), so have been considering switching to dutasteride. it’s always nice when people report back how different treatments work as it gives the rest of us hope.

May I ask, how long have you been on dutasteride? And how long were you on finasteride prior to switching to dutasteride? Also are you also using minoxidil? it seems you added that to your regimen around the time you added dutasteride so was just curious how minoxidil has impacted your hair quality over that timeframe too.

Anyway thanks again for taking the time to post your results. I wish you continued good fortune with your treatment regimen.

I've been on dutasteride for over 3 years now. I'm unsure of the exact amount of time i was taking finasteride before i switched, but it was no less than 5 years. I noticed a very long shed that just wouldnt stop towards the end of my finasteride use, I noticed that my hair was getting thinner so i made the switch as a last ditch effort. To be honest if I had not switched I might have been alright in the long run, but dutasteride has completely stopped it in its tracks. I still dont even shed any hair in the shower. I have said before that I didn't respond to minoxidil, but I should have kept with it for a little longer. I quit it a little after 4 months because I didn't see any effect, that includes a shed. It seemed like it just wasn't doing anything for me so i put it down, didn't even shed after i quit. I'm considering trying it again and dedicating a full 12 months to it.

Hi @dm900 ,

I've been on finasteride for a few years. Seem to be holding on to what I have. Also on min which seems to be thickening things up slowly. I recently ordered some dutasteride with a view to boosting my results. I can't afford to do it every day so I ordered enough for once/week dosage. Do you think this will help while continuing finasteride the other six days of the week?

So further hair loss has been completely avoided but no regrowth at all?

Yeah thats been the status for a few years now. I've been on minoxidil now twice a day for a few weeks, as I mentioned earlier i'm going to give it a full year before finally putting it to rest. I don't really think about my hairloss very much anymore, which is honestly is an incredible outcome for me. If I still don't respond to minoxidil in a year i'll probably start consulting for a minor transplant to reinforce my hairline and call it a day on worrying about this stuff.
