Can't Tell How If Thinning, Receding, Or Both?

Hey everyone, just made an account cause I need some opinions as to what is going on with my hair and what I should do. A little background info: 26 year old Asian male, baldness is common in my family. Dad always had thin hair and started losing hair at 26, became very thin on top with thick sides; his hair loss stopped at 30 and began again in his 40s. He started using finasteride at 48 but by that time he had very thin hair and just wanted to keep what he had left. Dad said I have thicker hair + more then he ever did at my age. My hair is a combination of my mom and dad, but on my mom's side my maternal grandfather started losing hair at 40 and became bald on top by 58, but had lots of hair on the sides still. Uncles and relatives follow the same bald on top, thick on sides hair pattern except for my mom's brother and the one odd uncle who both have a full head of hair.

Recently started noticing that I began losing a lot more hair in the shower and when combing/styling, turned 26 a few months ago and after a haircut saw that my temples have lost a lot of density and had began to recede more than I thought. I have always had a high hairline and a big forehead so in terms of frontal recession I'm not sure if there is any, but in terms of temple recession I definitely feel like I've had some and a lot of thinning of the temples too, especially on the left side (less density and miniaturization, you can see a lot of skin on the left side of my temples).

I've attached some pictures (these photos were taken last week after a haircut) and would like to hear from you guys what you all think? I went to a dermatologist who did say I had very mild temple recession but no hairloss or thinning on the crown and frontal areas. He does not recommend propecia yet as it is a lifelong commitment and has told me to try minoxidil. What do you all think based on these pictures? Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time!

really? you don't see any thinning or any problem areas in your opinion? I've noticed that my right temple has receded further back and that the hairs on my left temple are so thin that you can see my skin now. Harder to see in those pictures but more noticeable in person :/

Your hair looks normal. I agree with your doctor's assessment. I would not do the Minoxidil due to the probability of shedding and making the area look worse. Just keep an eye on the area. You can try rosemary or peppermint oil of you really want to do something.

thanks for the response! Does minoxidil really make any difference when using it without the use of finasteride? I have a followup appointment in 6 months but I predict the thinning will be worse by then as well. Just started worrying about my hair since first noticing and am developing an unhealthy obsession over it :/ However I'm grateful I've held onto my hair for this long despite the odds being against me.

I wish I started sooner. I use 5%. Nothing else. It is suspect. I think it would be nice to have hair by forty. I will mitigate the damage as best I can. Otherwise, I will buzz or shave it when the time comes. I suggest you enjoy it as best you can for however long you have it.

You're balding pretty badly. It's better to accept it now and just shave it bro!

IMO it appears you're thinning in a 2A pattern but mild. Seems like lots of asians recede in that pattern. 20180513_012748.jpg gives me that impression. Do you have pictures in your teen years for comparison, but I"m fairly certain your hair was more even density wise.

haha thanks man, it's hard to see but my hair is definitely a lot thinner than what it used to be, especially on the temples...not sure if it's because I'm in my mid-to-late 20s now or if I'm starting male pattern baldness.

Yeah it would be the dream to have hair until 40, I'm trying to appreciate the time I have with my hair! Are you on finasteride or any other treatments at the moment? If so how's it going for you?

haha I think I will shave it to a buzzcut when the time comes, but I think I'd try finasteride at the very least if it comes down to it!

unfortunately in my teen years I had the asian bowl cut hair so everything was covered up :/ this is my hair from 2013. From looking at it seems like I've always had uneven density on my temples, but it feels worse now in my opinion. Definitely feel like my hair is getting thinner and it's been growing a lot slower. Don't know if it'll stop or keep progressing at a faster rate. Let me know what you think based on these pictures! First picture is my left side, second is my right side.

bump, still seeing lots of hair fall everyday, still worried so I took pictures today of my hairline, particularly the right side as it seems to be receding a lot more than the left. Pulled back my hair so hopefully you can see more of my hairline, what do you all think? Early male pattern baldness and mild recession, maturing hairline? Thanks again for the responses!

Think it's just maturing like me. My hairline is pretty similar I had been worrying about my hair for months finally understand that it's normal and not necessarily balding
