I have a prescription for Propecia. Have not used it yet, but I heard it has worked for some women in blocking dht. I heard it works well for women with Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness). I'm 50 years old, but I don't think women who are of child bearing age are suppose to use this stuff since it could cause birth defects in a male fetus.

Women have been warned against propecia/finasteride especially if you are of child bearing age and would like to have children. However, there are treatments that are specifically for women hair loss like minoxidil.

Veronica is correct.

If your hair loss is patchy or affects large portions of your scalp or body, then these are typically "Alopecias" (universalis, totalis, areata).

If your hair loss is thinning like men, this is considered hair loss caused by Hormone imbalance, malnutrition, thyroid, pregnancy, etc .... Determining the cause can cure the problem.

Either way, for the latter group, growth stimulants and antiandrogens are often recommended. You can see some here:

Female pattern hair loss is characterised by dilution over the highest of the scalp and generally the edges. In men, a male internal secretion referred to as associate androgenic hormone is primarily accountable for hair loss, however the most reason for FPHL seems to be less clear-cut. ladies unremarkably manufacture male hormones too, and in some cases the condition is related to excessive androgenic hormone levels. alternative styles of hair shedding in ladies is also associated with oestrogen loss or vital changes in oestrogen levels, as within the postnatal amount or in change of life. Hair loss also can result from breakage throughout hair treatments and styling, bound medication—including hormones—and conditions like iron deficiency, severe fasting, thyroid sickness, lupus, and even stress.

Thanks !!

Finasteride (Propecia) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat male pattern hair loss (also called androgenetic alopecia). At higher doses, it's also approved to reduce the symptoms of enlarged prostrate in men. It works by blocking the enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the androgen that causes the prostate to enlarge. It also reduces dihydrotestosterone levels in the scalp, which slows hair loss and even increases hair growth. Because finasteride has been effective in controlling male pattern hair loss, it has been used to treat female pattern hair loss, although it has not gained FDA approval for that purpose. Medication prescribed to treat a condition that does not have FDA approval for that use is known as “off label “. Doctors can legally prescribe any medication they deem appropriate for treatment . "If a woman has female pattern hair loss and elevated androgen levels that we can document, then she is likely to respond to treatments that block or decrease androgens, and finasteride is an option.

Finasteride has been used to treat female pattern hair loss and is reported to be effective for some women, but to date there is no good evidence from well-designed clinical trials to support its use for that purpose. Our advice: If you're a woman with thinning hair or significant hair loss, talk with your doctor about a referral to a specialist to look for underlying causes and approved treatments, such as minoxidil (Rogaine and generic). Finasteride probably plays little or no role in reversing hair loss in women with normal or low androgen levels.

PRP therapy is good for excessive hair loss for both male & female.
