Can Women use the Same Hair Loss Treatments as Men?

Can woman use the same hair loss treatment as man? if not what is the difference?

I have a prescription for Propecia. Have not used it yet, but I heard it has worked for some women in blocking dht. I heard it works well for women with Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness). I'm 50 years old, but I don't think women who are of child bearing age are suppose to use this stuff since it could cause birth defects in a male fetus.

Women have been warned against propecia/finasteride especially if you are of child bearing age and would like to have children. However, there are treatments that are specifically for women hair loss like minoxidil.

If your hair loss is patchy or affects large portions of your scalp or body, then these are typically "Alopecias" (universalis, totalis, areata).

If your hair loss is thinning like men, this is considered hair loss caused by Hormone imbalance, malnutrition, thyroid, pregnancy, etc .... Determining the cause can cure the problem.

Finasteride (Propecia) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat male pattern hair loss (also called androgenetic alopecia). At higher doses, it's also approved to reduce the symptoms of enlarged prostrate in men. It works by blocking the enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the androgen that causes the prostate to enlarge.
