As of right now I have very slow male pattern baldness (NW2 for 5 years) and have started a treatment of rogaine as to not end up an Norwood 2a/3a like my father (he is 56, so I think it may not be severe). After thinking about it for a few weeks and agonizing over the social implications if I let myself recede, I decided to get a prescription for finasteride.
The 2 dermatologist hair specialists I spoke with assured me the risks of side effects are relatively low (2-4% as reported) and the risks of those being permanent are significantly less on top of that. One had said she saw 1 case in her time as a hair loss specialist and the other had said she had never seen patients with the sides. But on these forums it seems like it's story, after story, after story of everything from developing a useless penis to hyperandrogenicity all the way to feeling suicidal. I have been on and off lexapro and always recover from my sides that I have had when I was on the drug, but I understand these 2 are not simulacrum. So forgive me if I ask questions.
Am I missing any statistics on these sides or things like hyperandrogenicity? Are there not more cases of people having very good results (regrowth and minimal sides)?
I would really like the peace of mind I am doing everything I can to halt (regrow if lucky) male pattern baldness, at least for another 5-10 years.
Thank you.
