I have noticed this side of the year that anything between the last 1cm-2 1/2 inches of my hair is white/unpigmented when it falls out. Last year every time i had a hair fall, it was literally only a few mm that was white, if any.

What gives? is this normal? this has only been happening since january since starting propecia (i stoped propecia in april)

What gives?

its probably just a shed making way for thicker healthier hairs. I would carry on taking propecia and hopefully these hair will come back, you need to give the drug at least 1 year before judging its effectiveness.

Unless this is some sort of little known side effect of propecia, it could very well denote a protein deficiency or being old.

I had tried Propecia last year, had a minor shed but didnt keep up with it, i try propecia this year, shed like a M'F***er within like 6 weeks, and start getting loads of sides (a bit of gyno, brain fog, stutter, weakness in arms and legs, wiped out sex drive etc...) so i quit it at like 3 months and 1 week. Been off it for a month and so far all sides have gone, but there is no sign of any shed hair growing back. and this wierd problem.

Im 22 so not old, but could a protein deficiency really do this? and how could it cause a problem like this?

*Puts hand up* I had this!

First I thought it was another symptom of my thyroid thing but now... I think the hairs might just be weak :( you know? Like how when people's hair thins it can go all "whispy". What you need to do is take a supplement to strengthen the little melanocytes I believe theyre called that pigment the hair. I am unsure what does this right now, but I'm sure they must exist :)

Additionally herbs like He Shou Wu are supposed to help with hair pigmentation, but I would favour the first approach personally, at least initially :)

Oh, edit, also inhibiting 5ar does seem to have all kinds of weird side effects, so I wouldnt rule out the propecia.

some people get random gray hairs even in their late teens

exactly, thats why i brought up the possibility of it being a grey hair. especially because it seems to long just to be a vellus hair.

i havea buddy of mine who is 21 and has noticably greying in the sides and back. he has a good attitude though and just takes it with a grain of salt.

If you look at the picture again, you'll see its not just the white bit, the hair is dark brown/black and continues, it was about 6 inches in length this particular hair. its only the bottom 1cm or so that suddenly goes white. i found one the other day with white bit nearly 2 inches long!

Hoppi :)

You said you "had this", what did you do to get rid of it? i will look into suppliments for hair pigmentation too :)

Melanotan perhaps, with the added benefit of tanning really easily :)

im 22. it seems that almost every hair that falls has this white/unpigmented area at the base, sometime 1cm up to 3 inches or more. its usually about 2 inches though.

ive found whole hairs like this that only grow to about 3.5 inches.

could this be a gi problem too? as i get alot of discomfort in my abdomen where my large intestine is. its been there since the beginning of the year, and my hair loss has been considerably worse since then. the pain hasnt moved around. its just gotten bigger (in area) and occasionally flares up more then usual.

ive been to the docters twice about this and they keep telling me its normal, which i know it isnt as everyone ive asked has said they dont experience this.....

That's quite interesting Karl about the pain, I'm sorry to hear about it, but it does remind me very much of what Justin said he had at the beginning of his hair loss. He said he had this really bad pain around his stomach, worse than pains he's had before, and THEN his loss started. He managed to get on top of it as far as I know by going.. basically VERY healthy with a great diet, jogging etc etc

Whether that is the solution in your case as well I can't say, I don't fully understand how some of these things affect the hair.

I would imagine things like melatonin, taurine and MSM wouldn't hurt with the hair pigmentation, but what would be more interesting and probably constructive is to determine why they are doing it in the first place, as it does sound unusual.

Most of the functioning of your major organs are connected in one way or another to your gut. A strange pain there is NOT normal and should be urgently treated. As far as the pigmentation process goes, immune system related attacks on the scalp can kill off (most often temporarily) the pigmentation cells separately from the follicle cells. What sort of a problems do your relatives have?

Hoppi, you're on finasteride still? Anti-androgens are used in treatment of AA as well as the reduction in DHT lessens the inflammation. But it's just a superficial band aid in those cases and localized anti-inflammatory meds would carry much less side effects.
