This is from a reddit thread on haircarescience.

Amazingly, things like rosemary, menthol, ginger, cinnamon and chili don't even make the top 10 list, and rosemary may even constrict arteries and reduce bloodflow.

Out of all the essential oils, what isolated compound is the most powerful vasodilator?

What oils have these compounds in them?

The answers:

Patchouliguaiol F
Carvacrol
Thymol
Citral
Eugenol
all cause vasodilation

The best sources are Patchouli oil, Thyme Oil, Lemongrass Oil and Clove Oil (but use less of this).

Rosemary does not even make the list as a vasodilator. Menthol is not a true vasodilator and does not relax blood vessels.
The idea that things like ginger, cinnamon and chili increase bloodflow is based on a poor understanding of science.

If people really looked at the science they would be surprised. Patchouli oil, or Spikenard which contains patchoulol, directly vasodilate the blood vessels and increase bloodflow.

Oral minoxidill is a good vasodilator.

That matches what the research shows fairly well (RXShop.md pharmacy editorial team, general information only):
  • The main rosemary study (2015) compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over 6 months and found similar hair counts. But 2% minoxidil is the weakest strength (men normally use 5% or oral), the study was small, and both groups improved only modestly. So "as good as minoxidil" really means "as good as a low-dose comparator in one small trial".
  • It does not block DHT in any meaningful way, so on its own it will not stop androgenetic alopecia from progressing.
  • Where it can fit: as a scalp-care add-on for people who like it, or for those who cannot use other treatments. Dilute it in a carrier oil; undiluted essential oils can irritate or cause contact dermatitis, which itself increases shedding.
For anyone with active pattern loss, the order of priority is still: a DHT blocker, minoxidil, then add-ons like microneedling or ketoconazole shampoo. Rosemary can come after those.
