This is from a reddit thread on haircarescience.
Amazingly, things like rosemary, menthol, ginger, cinnamon and chili don't even make the top 10 list, and rosemary may even constrict arteries and reduce bloodflow.
Out of all the essential oils, what isolated compound is the most powerful vasodilator?
What oils have these compounds in them?
The answers:
Patchouliguaiol F
Carvacrol
Thymol
Citral
Eugenol
all cause vasodilation
The best sources are Patchouli oil, Thyme Oil, Lemongrass Oil and Clove Oil (but use less of this).
Rosemary does not even make the list as a vasodilator. Menthol is not a true vasodilator and does not relax blood vessels.
The idea that things like ginger, cinnamon and chili increase bloodflow is based on a poor understanding of science.
If people really looked at the science they would be surprised. Patchouli oil, or Spikenard which contains patchoulol, directly vasodilate the blood vessels and increase bloodflow.
