I noticed my hairloss when I was 23 and acted on it 2 months before my 24th birthday - since taking propecia I can honestly say I regret It I experienced MASSIVE shedding for well over a year and there was no one and I mean NOONE that would help - I did get on treatments early listening to people on this board and that is all well and good advice I really have nothing against it but I suffered reflex hyperandrogenicity from taking propecia it wasn't some 'typical shed' from taking propecia (I also switched to dutasteride for a 3 month stint after a year on propecia) I lost so much hair I went to a THICK head of hair with slight recession to having to buzz my head down and cover up all the spots on top that are showing through now easily I am 25 and have nothing to show for acting on it early I have lost well over half of my coverage on top and have had several tests from dermatologists and so called hair 'specialists' and no help is available all they say is keep taking the drug! I have stopped the drug and voilà my extreme persistent hairloss stops I was losing it from the sides and even my eyebrows! I am in no way trying to persuade people to not act fast I am just saying that sometimes it is not as simple as oh quick start taking this pill - everything must be considered before taking the plunge towards taking propecia. I am still getting terrible scalp itch and losing hair now which is all part of my hormones trying to balance out from the dht and t conversion I guess, I am monitoring it with blood tests but I fear the damage has been done and I can never fix what I have lost.
Great post, and point. Some people just have a tendency to over simplify matters. While it's "better than nothing", propecia is far from a cure all and I just wish that something better comes along that actually makes a ****ing difference.

I'm not even sure why I started this thread.. There aren't any real treatments for us.

The fact that you have to put your health on the line for hair is f*cking nuts. As of September 25th, 2013 (today), there aren't any viable treatments for male pattern baldness.

We are unfortunately f*cked and on our own. I don't want to have to risk any part of my health or well being for hair.

Makes me f*cking sick its almost 2014 and no one has done sh*t to help us.

And remember one point with finasteride : it works only if your hair loss is due to excess of androgens (it's an 5 alpha reductase inhibitor), if your hair loss is due to genetic, stress o wathever, it won't work !!!

I'm 21 y/o almost 22 started on the Big3 since I started noticing balding around 17-18, then I skipped minoxidil/finastirde for 6 months I went traveling, my hair got so much worse I had to wear caps all the time. When I went back to my country(almost 20y/o) I decided I would start taking the Big 3 until I die or a new cure appears.
My hair right now is much better (Norwood 1.5) because of persisting with the treatment for around a year and a half.

SAVEEEE YOUR HAIR, GO ON TO TO THE BIG 3 AS ASOON AS POSSIBLE! By watching all my 4 elder brothers develpment of hairloss I know I would be a lot balder if not, their hair went from perfect to almost crap in less than 3 years in their early twenties. (I have the worse genes regarding to hair loss, almost all the males in my family are affected)

Definitely true that you need to start on treatments earlier. Whilst you're completely right in that it is easier to maintain than regrew, you are also more likely to get regrowth [however small] where hair has only just miniaturized/receded.

Most of the future treatments will cater to those who have saved most or as much of their hair as possible.

Lets just hope we're not all 80 and in a wheelchair by the time they come out. :thumbdown2:

I feel propecia is making a deal with the devil. Yes it might go well for you, but its anyones guess what happens long term on it. If something goes wrong like the above poster no one can help you there is no cure and its not very well understood. Fixing a hormone problem is basically just making more problems and cant really be done. I can understand why lots of guys still try it I mean its the only option, but I think not treating it is still the safest option. If it bothers you a lot I say take the propecia, but if its going really slow or you can live with it I suggest waiting.

I don't agree with this. I started treatments when I was 18. I'm 25 now and the hairloss is just continuing. All I did was buy myself time and false hope.

The only drug that can actually STOP hair loss is Dutasteride. Propecia slows it down.
