Telogen Effluvium or male pattern baldness (Pic included)

After I finished my low calorie diet 4 weeks later I noticed thinning at the top of my hair. I have been experiencing excessive amounts of shedding on the top, sides and back. But mainly from the top as hair on the top is bigger in size then the rest of the head. (I usually have grade 1 back and sides haircut )

I went to the doctor and got my blood checked and everything came back fine. After flicking through my hair one of the GP suggested I have male pattern baldness. (But I wasn’t given a proper head examination)

I been searching through the net to diagnose myself, I came across Telogen Effluvium and most the symptoms seen to suggest I may be suffering from it. I also tried the pinch method and manage to gently pull out 4 hairs. The shedding hair all has a club like shape will a white bulb.
For the past few days I have been taking biotin and the hair shedding has slowed down.

History
My dad aged 55 has thinning hair and my mum’s dad (age: 65+ I think) is bald on top

If all your tests came back fine and your doctor suspects it is natural hair loss then you are in the early stages of male pattern baldness. You now have to decide if you want to try and stop it with medication, use hair thickening products and/or get a buzzcut.

If it's malnutrition then a good diet or daily multivitamin tablet will restore your hair. When your hair is dry your hair loss can only be spotted by a trained eye though.

Telogen Effluvium would shed ALL OVER the head, including the donor area.

Looking at that picture shows distinct, unmistakable crown thinning. It's male pattern baldness.
You'd have to be seriously undernourished to get Telogen Effluvium from your diet - people who get Telogen Effluvium due to poor diet are practically anorexia sufferers (and another tell-tale sign of this, is they start to grow thin, wispy hairs all over their body.)

You've male pattern baldness. Your options are finasteride, minoxidil and nizoral; Concealers such as Toppik; a transplant (in the future); a wig; or a hat.

I live in the UK finasteride is called Propecia here.

At the moment I am taking oxytetracycline for my acne

Will Propecia cause any problems for me.

Will Propecia 0.25/0.50 be a good start for me?

plus I will add nizoral too

Looks like it could be the start of vertex balding... Kinda hard to tell from the angle and the lighting... If it is, though, you´ve caught it early.

To answer your questions: No, most likely propecia won´t cause any problems. And if it does, those problems will go away after you quit the drugs. This is the case for 99.9& of all propecia users.

And to the second question: No, not really. 1mg is the optimal dose for hair growth. Other doses still inhibits DHT, but clinical trials shows that 1 mg is the most effective dosage.
Of course, you will still have results on 0.5, maybe even on 0.25, but those results probably won´t be as good as if you had taken 1mg.

Correct, but that doesn't mean it would be as easily recognizable in all spots of the scalp at the same time.

You say the doctor said "all" the tests came back clean. What exact tests were done?

It was a blood test to check for thyroid and iron levels.

Anyways guys I have accepted male pattern baldness and have decided to treat it before it's too late. Luckily I have caught it before it got worse.

Anyways I got a prescription of Propecia and been taking it for 2 days at the moment.

After a month I am planning to at minoxidil to the mix.

I hope everything goes fine and please guys pray for me.

I will keep this thread updated with news

There are way more then 2 tests that comprise everything to watch out for.

The doctor only suggested two test which came back positive.

Although I am thinning on the top, I am also shedding hair from the sides and back. This doesn't sound like male pattern baldness too me.

You're right, it sounds more like not male pattern baldness than male pattern baldness. In the short term just going on propecia would technically help alleviate your hair loss some because the way it screws around with your hormones it has many effects besides just reducing DHT. But since it does sound like you have something besides a simple DHT mediated hair loss using propecia would just cover up the symptoms of a more serious problem underneath. What other sort of health issues do you have (major/minor)?

I have no health issues, I am a healthy young guy.

Shedding on the sides and back have stop, only shedding on the top now

Update...

Nearly a week on propecia only side effect I had was mild testicle pain which disappeared in 2 days. Sex drive was also effected, but now everything is back to normal.

I usually spend a one day reading horrible stories on this forum, I recommend any new user to stay away from the horrible story thread because your mind can play games with you.
