Switching To dutasteride Due To Paranoia? Help

Hey guys,

I've been on 1.25 mg of Finasteride daily for a year and a half now. I can honestly say that my hair is still the same if not a little better since starting. However, over the past month I have been shedding like a mofo (finding more hair in the shower and places where I work) and it is getting me paranoid and I'm thinking about switching to dutasteride before I lose massive ground. However last year around this time I did go through some heavy shedding as well, so maybe I should just wait it out. Thoughts?

EDIT: I would add in minoxidil, however I tried it for 6 months; all it gave me was very little regrowth at my temples and made my face bloated as hell.

Don't always equate shedding as permanent loss. Your hair looks perfect still. Hold off for now. I told you I tried dutasteride and it was no better than finasteride. And I think it actually made my hair line diffuse more. I know you truly value your hair but you need to realize you don't have aggressive hair loss. Minoxidil used with finasteride may not always translate to regrowth but it could slow things down better than just finasteride alone. If you had facial bloating cut it down to once per day or every other day and see if that works better. Or try using 2 percent minoxidil instead once per day every day.

Thank you for your reply DoctorHouse I always appreciate it. If the shedding doesn't stop in a month I may add in minoxidil foam once a day at night.

I don't know the exact science, but minoxidil can cause water retention which causes facial bloating.

Yes but it cause water retention with oral medication which is 5mg!

Topical absorb only 1,4% = 0,85mg

Maybe our scalp is absorbing too much cause some form of irritation from nizoral or others harsh shampoos

Update: Decided against dutasteride but added in minoxidil foam once a day at night a couple of days ago. I have been just applying it to my temples, forelock, and cowlick area.
Slayer hair. Still one of the best heads of hair in this forum.

man don't bother with minoxidil. there is always the risk of dependant hair .

you are a Norwood 0, perfect head of hair . i will not blame you for taking fina as a preventive measure , because you can never know how hairloss can evolve .
and if it bother you that much with a fullhead of hair, i can't imagine how you would react if you were just a Norwood 2 or 2.5 .

the thing which make me said that you 're crown and mid scalp is immuned to DHT ( for the moment) , is that you can start and quit minoxidil , and not losing ground .

man i would kill for your hair

keep taking fina .
man when i started fina i was like you, ( maybe less better hair ) , with BDD , ruining my life
AND now almost Norwood 3 . you can never predict the evolution of the loss .

i would kill to come back in the past and enjoy these years i have lost ( when i had that much hair ).

You have literally no hair loss whatsoever. Your crown looks thicker than most without hair loss, because you have naturally dense hair. Everyone still has a cowlick, and yours is barely visible even with a bright light on it cuz your hair is so dense. Your hairline looks amazing too. I honestly don't think you have male pattern baldness at all. Did a doctor prescribe you propecia? I can't imagine any dermatologist would think you have hair loss.

Thank you for your reply, you think my crown still looks fine in those new pictures I posted today? I did have a derm write me a script for Finasteride; I was starting to shed a lot and had recession at my temples. I would probably stay on it anyways because it is cheap and I have a family history of (non-aggressive) hair loss.

Yes crown looks fine in all the pics you posted. And it doesn't hurt to stay on it if you have no sides, but just because you have a family history doesn't mean you will go bald. Personally, I wouldn't recommend starting finasteride until some male pattern baldness signs start, or if hair loss is extremely aggressive in one's family, but to each his own. I suppose better safe than sorry.

I definitely do not recommend minoxidil though if your hair looks like that.
