Would using spironolactone cream in conjunction with finasteride be a powerful combination, or would that be pointless. Is there anyone here who has tried it? what were the results?

I have always wondered, does finasteride do exactly what finasteride does, just not systematically....

finasteride works by internally reducing the amount of T conversion to DHT.

spironolactone topically works - as quoted by Dr Lees "(1) inhibits the synthesis of DHT, (2) converts testosterone in the scalp to estrogen, and (3) blocks the androgen receptor sites on the hair follicles, effectively preventing even circulating DHT from attaching to the receptor sites."

As Finasteride raises your testosterone levels - useage of spironolactone in conjunction as well could very well help with your hairloss fight as it is believed by many that both testosterone and DHT both directly kill your hair follicles.

I am not personally using finasteride and spironolactone as Finasteride gives me sides... so I can't answer your question in regards to the combination and how effective it is.

There's conflicting information as to whether or not spironolactone acts as a 5a-reductase inhibitor. I've seen one study which said that it does do that, and another study which says that it doesn't.

Thanks Brian - Damn conflicting information... there's alot of that that goes around.... I suppose that's how so many people make good money from hairloss products and why I keep spending :( ....

cmudave - point 1 of my quote from Dr Lee regarding spiros inhibition of DHT synthesis seems somewhat questionable based on the studies Brian has read(so who knows).... therefore one might conclude that it essentially works differently to finasteride as it only converts T to E on the scalp and blocks the androgen receptor sites on the follicle.
Either way it shouldn't hurt to use in conjucntion with finasteride..... how successful it will be is likely up to the individual....
