Hello All,

New here and looking for some advice.

I do have other hair loss issues to do with a systemic illness or the like causing some major diffuse hair loss - my hair was very, very thick (if not a little annoyingly thick) and has literally just fallen out at a very rapid rate all over my head. Front, back, top, sides, eyebrows, you name it, now very thin indeed.

Anyway, i am still shedding in a huge way, its now noticable in places as the front of my hair is patchy, you can see my scalp through my hair pretty much everywhere and my crown has grown about 10x the size in about 3 months - way to fast for just male pattern baldness, and the fact eyebrows involment just tells me it isnt male pattern baldness causing this fall out

I am pretty sure these areas are more prominent to notice because they are the only areas that my hair has partings/edges & it is quite long.

BUT

I do know that these areas are the prone to the beginning of male pattern baldness and if you have the androgens & DHT, after 1 hair goes, the next one comes back small, miniaturization etc.

My questions are these;

IF it was male pattern baldness - and my crown was pretty much non-existant (ie couldnt even get to my scalp through it there was so much thick hair) 3 months ago - now it is massive, with patches of no hair, even if all the hair in this area went at once, more should come back at the same time as each other and not leave an actual bald spot in that area...untill miniaturization is complete some cycles later?

And if my scalp hair has gone from healthy thick stuff to it falling out & no regrowth - this must mean there is something not allowing the follicle to function?

Is there a way of me determining whether i have alot of DHT being converted (enough to warrant male pattern baldness) or other markers - tests etc?

I already know that I have very low testosterone which clearly doesnt go hand in hand with MBP.

I basically want to kick whatever has caused this hair loss out of my system and grow the rest of it back, i want my mind at rest that it will all come back - but at the same time am worried that it could be mixed with male pattern baldness.

Cheers guys for any comment
Luke

Im in a similar boat,i used to have immensly think hair a year n a half ago, i think my loss is related to MBP, but also some form of Telogen Effluvium and another unknown factor. i started finasteride at the beginning of this year, 6 weeks later and i shed like a b*tch, however litterally a few days before starting finasteride i quit some very nasty drugs i was doing. both events could have caused the shed, but alot of the hair at the front has just fallen out and simply not grown back, i quit finasteride in april and still nothing.. i lost density all over my scalp and do seem to be finding some of these so called `intermediate` hairs around the back n sides, but nothing up top, at the front, or on the crown. Not even so much as a vellus hair, ive checked using a microscope (although there are a few around my hairline but i think this is a receding hairline thing, and its the only place i notice them)

Ive just started a similar thread here :

You are correct in assuming that there is a decent chance the hair loss you are experiencing is not related to male pattern baldness (or at least solely related to male pattern baldness) considering the symptoms you described. The addition of eyebrow hair loss and low testosterone certainly could hint at possible Alopecia Areata (which doesn't have to be just patchy) which is a result of your immune system attacking your hair, not DHT. How is the consistency, appearance of your beard hair?

My hair loss was similar in this nature and did not stop until I removed the problem that was causing my immune malfunctioning but not all causes of AA are as straight forward. Do you experience frequent scalp irritation/inflammation (does it itch)? How are your sinuses? What about body hair?

If you are experiencing inflammation you should try topical hydrocortisone till you can see a specialist (who hopefully won't just try and sell you a prescription to finasteride). Hydrocortisone works as a decent treatment for the symptoms of AA most of the time but the topical is only 1/3 as effective as the local injections a doctor could provide. Even still you would have to hunt down the actual cause of it all.
