Hello, I am debating getting a hair system. Started losing my hair early 20’s now 30 years of age. Used hair fibres for some time.

My question is does anybody regret/wished they hadn’t started wearing a hair system and now feels locked in?

Secondly how long have you guys worn a hair system for?

thanks.

no mate, no regrets from me.
It takes a while to get used to the maintenance and the routine, however beats being bald. Been wearing a system since i was 21 and nearly 27 now, so 6 years.

Absolutely no regrets. I only wish I’d had done the hair system sooner. I didn't know anything about hair systems until Aug of last year. I took the plunge and got myself few hair systems 12 months ago. It was money well spent and I really love it. Before wearing a hair system, I used to spend a lot of money at the salons for a haircut , hair perming services, and hair products every year. The hair system worked out great for me and cost much less than dealing with my bio hair. The morning fixing hair routine is much quicker than doing my thin bio hair. There are just so many things that are better and easier. It’s very comfortable being able to have hair again. A small price for the great results and very pleased I took the plunge. I have no regrets. The only part I hate is having to shave off all the thin bio hair on top of my scalp.

No regrets from me either. It’s not a perfect solution, but when you compare it with the risks and results from the alternatives - transplants, drugs and tattoos - it’s the best we have for now. If you choose wisely and keep up the maintenance it can be pretty much a perfect-looking solution.

I don’t think you need to worry about being trapped. If you hate it, you “shaved your head for charity” or “you lost a bet”, and 6 weeks later you are back where you started.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it.

I’m not comfortable going down the DIY route yet so been for a consultation at a barbers. The lady has recommended to start with a poly base light density with 10% grey. It will last 3 months and require maintenance visits every 4 weeks. She also recommended having 2 systems on the go and alternating them at each visit. (4 systems a year)
Do you guys think this is a good idea to start off with? Just concerned it isn’t breathable and it will be attached to my scalp for 4 weeks at a time... is this doable?

thanks

Jamie.

Hi Jamie,

1. How well versed in hair system is your barber? If this is not their main focus, or at least a major focus... I would ask for customer before/pics, at a minimum. And maybe see if there is a hair system specialist in your area. Even if you need to travel, it can be worth it. You can always have your barber do the maintenance or maintenance cuts.

2. Poly isn't breathable, and four weeks is a long time. If you sweat, it can be problematic, and potentially uncomfortable.

3. We NEVER recommend that a customer purchase two systems at the beginning. Even if this is a stock system (you didn't mention), it may not be right for you (color, fit, density, etc), so unless they offer a 100% money back guranty, you would be stuck with two systems that don't work, instead of one.

4. There isn't really a big benefit to alternating, as I personally discovered. You also need to make sure that the haircut on both is exactly the same, and that will be almost impossible.

Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

Hi Steve,

I do have trust in the barber and she has showed me before/after pictures.
Sorry I wasn’t very clear before, she suggested getting the second system a couple of months in once I know I’m happy with the system.
I did get the opportunity to see and speak to one of her clients and the hair system was faultless.

Is it possible to keep a lace system on for 4 weeks at a time? I really am not comfortable taking the system off and re-attaching it myself between visits initially.

Hi Jaime,

Thanks for clarifying.

You can keep lace on for four weeks, but you probably don't want to. It would be potentially more comfortable than poly, it's still not very hygienic.

If you don't sweat much, are not very active, and live in a relatively cool climate, it's doable, I guess.

I can get between 10 days to 2 weeks, but prefer to remove and refit every week. I also live in a very hot climate. It was 38º on Tuesday, for example, and 33º yesterday, and I had no issues at one week. I bond with tape.

Best,

Steve

Well I live in the UK so wet and cold for the majority of the year!
And I don’t sweat much and not very active, work wise I’m in a surgery setting so don’t get dirty etc.

I may have to think about re-fitting myself between visits (every 2 weeks) if that’s the case.
Is it difficult positioning it back into place?

I would certainly try a poly to start, the maintenance is easier.

In the beginning, refitting for me, was a disaster, because I didn't know the tricks.

Once you know the trick... it's easier. It's different for tape than for glue.

It takes longer to write than to do it. I can send you a write-up when I have it finalized. But basically, it involves spraying some alcohol on the adhesive on your scalp (or a tape), it gives you about 60 seconds to position (you use a mirror). You check front to back, left to right... and once you are set, you set the rest of the system. It takes a few minutes.

I trained about a half dozen folks to do it (with tape) in London a couple of weeks back.

Any good guides or videos for getting a good alignment with glue, how to lay down the syste,? Hairdirect only has a very short one.

I think is a really important point.

Even if a system doesn't look perfect, it may still look far better than a bald head, a badly thinning head of hair, or a George Costanza-esque horseshoe of hair. Lets face it hair loss has a massive effect on one's appearence, and there's nothing wrong in wanting to address that.

Can I ask your opinions on my suitability for a hair system; I am concerned with my temple recession..
