Should I start with hairloss meds? (pics)

Hey

I'm about to turn 26 and in the last 5 years my hairline at the temples has been receding very slowly. I have thick hair and have no hairloss whatsoever on the top of my head and no hairloss on the crown. My 2 year older brothers hairline at the temples is also receding but less than mine. My father and all relatives all experienced minor hairloss at the temples before 30 but they all kept their hair even now when their 50+. Although their hair is rather thin with some bald patches. I would love to get some answers to:

- Based on the photos and this info, how does it look?
- If I want to prevent hairloss and even grow some hair back on the temples, would it be wise for someone at my stage to start with Rogaine and Propecia?
- Is it possible to get hair to grow back on the temples as it was before by using Rogaine?
- Does hairloss occur in different stages in life? Can I expect it to continue at this pace or is it possible that the hairloss will stop or that the pace might increase or decrease?

Thanks a lot!

Minor recession, based off your family history you have nothing to worry about.

Any treatment you start is a long term commitment, not worth it in your case.

Log out and enjoy your hair.

Looks like a really thick NW2 my friend. Put that mop on my head, and I'd be a happy dude. Go out and enjoy your hair, just keep an eye on it and take pictures every couple months if your really concerned.

It depends on what you want, based on these pictures and your family history I guess you'll continue to lose your hair at a slow pace, you may just have slightly thinner hair at 40. As JZA70 said, hair loss treatments are long term commitments, minoxidil can be quite annoying to use after a while and there is a possibility of sexual side effects from propecia. Is keeping this exact amount of hair this important to you ? You decide, you're indeed losing ground but it still looks good and I doubt you'll be bald in 5 years. I guess I would do it if I was in your shoes, but everyone is different :p
Minoxidil can regrow temples but this area is usually the hardest to get back.
For your last question, hair loss is usually quicker in the temples or the vertex area depending on people, then it can go at a much slower pace for the rest of the head (if you're lucky), but once it has started it rarely stops !

My hairline is exactly the same, almost eerily. I am the same age, and have had a similar loss rate (going back about 4 years). I chose to start on finasteride and minoxidil and I will tell you why - for the 6 months or so before I started I found myself more and more "nervous" about it. My hair line had indeed turned back, the miniturization was noticeable (especially on my already large forehead). And my hair is straightttttttt and fine, with cow licks all over the place, I don't have the Curley thick hair that many have and can cover their hairline for years.

My theory is, hell, I'll start on the treatments and stop obsessing over it. I still look at my hairline, but now I have the attitude "well I'm already doing what I can, so it's out of my Hands". I don't have any sides, atleast not noticeable, and so for me it's a cost, 30 bucks a month, to stop worrying about it so much.

I wish you the best of luck in your decision.

Currently a NW2A, not NW2.

Based of your family history, and state of hair.. I'd suggest getting a hair transplant to lower your hairline.

The five head isn't aesthetic, and throws off symmetry. It would be in your best interests to get 1k grafts.
You can't tell if it's a 2A from these pictures. You don't know where his hairline sat when he was a kid. The transplant Doctor always looks at the highest forehead wrinkle (where the juvenile hairline typically sits) and say about an inch up from that is where the mature hairline should be. Almost impossible to tell from just looking at his photos if he's of the A variety that you're suggesting.

Lil bit high hairline not much receding nothing to do but keep checking if u got any thinning or recession i think even if u got some it wouldnt be aggressive u r 26 . Btw if i got 2 choice between high hairline with very thick overall or low hairline with thinning all over i would gladly choose first . But luckly treatments makes wonders for me these days

And why not use minoxidil for temple peaks and hairline

If you want to slow things down even more than see a doctor on starting finasteride. Obviously, you are concerned about your hair or you would have never asked.

If you were 21 and said your hair had been receding slowly for the past 5 years I might say it would stop since you had just been finishing puberty and whatnot, but since you're past that I'd say that it will probably continue at this pace. At best it could continue at this pace, and at worst it could speed up. That is my non-professional but wholehearted opinion. Rogaine/minoxidil could work, but I've heard from people around this site that it loses effectiveness after a year, and there have been studies done that align with that sentiment. I would see a derm and find out if they think finasteride is a good idea.

As for how it looks, it looks good. Your widow's peak does a lot of good, and the recession is not to the point of looking obvious.

Thanks for all the great replies, it's really appreciated! I'm currently really happy about my hair and the hairloss at the temples doesn't bother me that much, my fear lies in losing a lot more hair in the future.

If I don't start using Rogaine/minoxidil now and wait a few years. Isn't there a risk that the hair follicules will die (if they aren't dead already) and that minoxidil won't work anymore? Compared to if I start using minoxidil now and the hair follicules might still be "alive"?
