shitty experience

Today I went into NYC to see a "true hair loss specialist." This guy is on the Diplomate American Board of Dermatology and is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at NYU. He must have have been in his late 60's or early 70's, so I thought this would be good.

So he asked me when I started noticing my hair loss and I told him. Before I could say anything else, he examined my scalp and said yes I have male pattern baldness but my I'm not really losing hair. I tried to explain to him that my hair has lost about 3/4 of its density and he basically kept telling me to shut up and stop thinking about it. He also told me to stop using Propecia because "it doesn't do anything" and there have been studies that show it can cause the prostate disorder that it was designed to stop. He said I have a pretty nasty case of dermatitis and when I told him about Nizoral and that it wasn't working well, he said that Nizoral isnt that great and he'd rather me use a Zinc based shampoo and prescribed something called "zincom" anyone ever heard of that? He also said Tea Tree shampoo is "bullshit."

He continued to tell me I am in need of psychiatrist. I wanted to show him pictures so he could see how badly my hair has thinned, but I honestly feared what he would do. Pretty shitty experience if you ask me. I got nothing out of this appointment that cost $350 other than stopping Propecia.

Heh. It's like every Doctor completely ignores the FDA approved study that shows 83% of men maintain hair counts on Finasteride, but they love that one independent study that shows maybe if you do get cancer the tumor might somehow maybe be enhanced by the use of Fina.

Too bad bro. I wouldn't trust him based on how he relates to his patients.

I think a 2nd opinion is defintely in order.

He was actually my fifth opinon (one of them wasn't exactly formal, a friend's dad briefly examined me). I just don't understand how this guy is supposed to be a hair specialist and doesn't even prescribe the 2 drugs that are FDA approved.

two said i had male pattern baldness and two said I just had dermatitis and my hair looked normal to them. The two to say I had male pattern baldness are the two who saw me first and knew what my hair was originally like. The two who said my hair looked perfectly normal never originally saw my hair. I thought I would get some closure

So his advice was to use a zinc shampoo, like head and shoulders, for male pattern baldness and that is it???? He got paid $350 for that???? So what does he recommend you use to treat thinning hair??? Nothing??

ouch $350. Did his secratery give you a hummer in the waiting room or something? that's f-ing outrageous. That's some of the worse advice I'd ever heard from a derm.
Did you pay by check?
I'd put a stop payment on that one if I were you. Do it soon to since the new banking laws (in NJ anyways) withdraw from a checking account immediatly when the check is deposited. No more waiting 3-4 days for a check to clear.

it cost 350 because it wasn't covered by my parents insurance plan. as for the hummer, i only got to drive it around the waiting room....they didn't let me take out into the hallways.

the zincon is to treat my dandruff/ dermatitis. he confused the sh*t out of me about my hair loss....he said i have early stages of male pattern baldness, yet he denied that my hair was falling out and everything that is happening is normal. When i tried to explain how dense my hair WAS, he said "NO, its all in your mind....you're hair is the same as always, but you have male pattern baldness" I was so damn confused. Everytime i tried to bring up how my hair is much thinner than it used to be, he stopped me short.

what a dick.. and i think BHD meant a hummer = blowjob, but a hummer truck would be nice too :)

i feel bad for you man, i know you are someone that is a little confused about the whole hairloss thing, whether its male pattern baldness, dermatitis, if propecia is working, etc. so i really think you needed some straight answers from someone who actually saw what your hair looks like, it sucks you are even more confused.

Mark ... you are going to drill yourself into the ground with all of this. When are you going to accept that you have male pattern baldness and just treat it and go on with your life? You've already seen nearly 7 doctors and now you're traveling into manhattan to see a specialist in dermatology ... simply because you have some thinning?

Exactly. You're a new hair loss sufferer with thinning hair. Accept this and move forward.

Don't you realize how excessive you're getting? You're going to kill yourself over this.

First off, you told him you've lost *Three Fourths* of your hair density?

You realize if that were the case you would look like this?

Probably good advice.

A very common condition for people with male pattern baldness

No but I would try it.

Doctors have a real problem with anything that sounds like bullshit. For all we know he could be right.

He's correct Mark. At this point. You've posted so many times with so many different theories ... I feel your pain but ... at some point your complete disregard for the input you get from people here is going to start pissing them off. A grumpy old man doctor who is 80 yrs old is done putting on a pretty face to the world. He's going to just blow out his tactless comments, but we've tried to tell you the same things and you just dont wanna hear it.

And to think, you paid $0 and got better advice here for free, and you ignored that too.

I agree with finding a way to treat your dermatitis. You may need to try 50 different things before you find the one for you.

Don't take this the wrong way, but having followed all your threads... and knowing what you have and havent tested for ... the only thing left is Syphillis. Have you been checked for Syphillis infection of the scalp yet?

People generally try to profit from your problems - Thats one side of Capitalism for you...the uglier side i think.

Markb11, Stick to your regimen and accept that you are doing all that you can. Intill you do that you will stay in exactly the same anxious state of mind, which is unhealthy...been there...

HairLossTalk.com kind of said all. It's time for YOU to decide my friend! Indecision is not a good characteristic to have IMHO.
