Rogaine Use And Heart Arrhythmia Side Effects

Hey everyone,

I've been using Rogaine 5% Foam for a little over 4 months now, and today the doctor told me I have heart arrhythmia. I've been experiencing it for roughly a week now, and I saw a lot of the people on this forum have had a similar experience. So I have a couple of questions for anyone else who is/has experienced this:

1.) How long did you take Rogaine before experiencing these symptoms?
2.) How long after quitting Rogaine did the symptoms disappear?

I am pretty sure Rogaine is causing this for me, as I am a 26 year old male who eats a clean diet and exercises regularly. I've never had heart issues until now, and I'm not taking any chances and quitting Rogaine cold turkey as of now. I just want to know how long these side effects will affect me (assuming Rogaine is the culprit). Any comments and experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Yes so I'm a 37 yr old female taking oral Minoxidil I'm 2months in and am experiencing heart palpitations . Thought I was just jacked from caffeine at first but now I'm assuming this is a random side effect. I also eat well and exercise so I don't need another health issue to worry about right now..I haven't went to Doctor yet.. So not sure what he'll say but I'll post the outcome. In my opinion if your healthy don't add more risk for the sake of hair. Let me say that there are much more serious health issues to stress over :) good luck! Please post if your side effect went away already

Can you elaborate further the arrthymia part? What kind if arrthymia? Atrial fibrillation? Ventricular premature beats?

It is very very unlikely for %5 topical minoxidil to cause heart problems.

It does and it will.Data demonstrate that minoxidil produces enlargement of the left ventricle, right ventricle and interventricular septum. The right ventricular enlargement produced by minoxidil treatment is due to an increase in myocyte cross-sectional area, a finding which may suggest pressure overload of the right ventricle.

Show me a case report of topical minoxidil induced left ventricular hypertrophy. It is true that oral minocidil may change the heart structure but topical minoxidil use doesn't result in clinically significant changes.

Show me a case report of topical minoxidil induced left ventricular hypertrophy. It is true that oral minocidil may change the heart structure but topical minoxidil use doesn't result in clinically significant changes.

Just for information. In 1987, a 12-month safety and efficacy study of 2% and 3% topical minoxidil involving 149 participants was published. The study concluded that there were no serious adverse effects. Parameters including blood pressure, pulse rate and blood levels of minoxidil were monitored, but the study did not perform a detailed echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular volume and mass.

One year later, in 1988, a study specifically designed to investigate the cardiovascular effects of topical minoxidil was published. Twenty men treated with minoxidil were compared with 15 receiving placebo for six months. Interestingly, the study was partially funded by Upjohn, the company developing and marketing minoxidil.

This study found statistically significant increases in left ventricular end-diastolic volume, cardiac output and left ventricular mass (approximately +5 g/m²), as well as an increase of 3–5 beats per minute in heart rate. The researchers themselves warned that the possibility of developing left ventricular hypertrophy after years of treatment needed to be investigated.

Upjohn publicly disagreed with these findings and cited another study led by Zeev Vlodaver involving 135 men, which supposedly found no change in cardiac output. The problem is that this study was unpublished, meaning that its complete data and methodology could not be publicly examined.

Everyone can draw their own conclusions. What we do know is that a controlled clinical trial specifically looking for cardiovascular effects found significant increases in left ventricular volume and mass. We do not know what happens to these changes after decades of use, which is precisely the question raised by the researchers themselves.

In my case, I used minoxidil from approximately the age of 18–20 until I was 33, and my left ventricle is now considerably enlarged. My cardiologist told me to stop using minoxidil precisely for this reason, and I have the cardiology report documenting it if anyone wants to see it.

For this reason, my recommendation, especially to parents of a young person who is starting to worry about hair loss, is to become very well informed before recommending a medication that they may end up using twice a day for decades. Personally, I would rather recommend accepting hair loss with dignity than taking a potential long-term cardiovascular risk simply to keep one’s hair.
