receding or not?

Hello all. I'd like opinions on whether my hairline is definitely receding or not. I realize that you wouldn't be here unless you had experienced some sort or hair loss yourselves, and so most of you would probably tell me to err on the side of caution. That might be right, but I don't have a lot of money to spend of treatments that could be unnecessary, and anyway why risk the side effects if I have time to wait and see where things are going?

That said, the first three pictures at the bottom are of my hair wet and combed back so that you can clearly see the hairline. (I attached the photos in the wrong order, so start from the bottom) The fourth is my hair dry and parted on the side to show as much of my head as possible.

Now, this looks to me like a N2 or possibly N3, but I have some reasons to hope that my hairline isn't receding after all. Until recently I always kept my hair pretty long and almost never bothered to brush it or even think about it, so it's hard to tell where my hairline was, though I remember it being very high. But looking through some old pictures I found two from about 2 1/2 years ago where my hair was brushed aside so that it was possible to see my hairline, and it looks to be at about the same level. The last picture is me trying to imitate the position of the other pictures for comparison.

Family history isn't much help, since by bad luck I don't have any living adult male blood relatives.

So am I going bald very slowly? not at all? Or is it impossible to tell? Could my hairline really just be that high? And should I try to treat it just to be safe, or give it some time?

Thanks for any help.

i see baby hairs in pic 2 & 3, it looks like recession tbh. sometimes, hair loss is really slow. i've been getting a thin spot on my crown for about 3 years and still have at least half of my hair there.

Your at least NW2, probably 3 and there's some substantial thinning in the front. So yes, looks like your losing your hair unfortunately.

Definitely get on the meds my friend, minoxidil and finasteride are needed! I'm 24 now, but I had the same kind of receding hairline it was very slow paced and had been gradually moving from NW1-NW3 since I was 18.

I also have quite a high forehead, so my mind used to play tricks on me as longer hair lengths would make my hairline look like it was receeding and shorter lengths would make it look fine again. This resulted in me kidding myself that it wasn't happening or that it wasn't going to happen for a while anyway... until I got to 21 and I realised I was a definite NW2! So act now unless you wan't to be a NW3 like me.

Thats a very high forehead its still NW2 but the signs dont look good. Looks like you have very weak genetics in terms of hair. Clearly like me you were never a NW1.

My hair looked a lot worse when I wasn't on meds and it has improved a great deal in the last few months.I was never a NW1 either and my right temple had that receded look even when I was a kid and I never really liked the buzz cut because of that.

If you want regrowth in your temples and long term maintenance try MIN and finasteride. If you are satisfied with your current hairline and expect only mild improvements and long term maintenance, use finasteride alone.BTW how old are you ?

Yes this is definately hairloss...Its progress a bit but overall it doesnt look that bad on you. You just look like a normal guy with a receding hairline, nothing horrible compromising to your looks. Might not even be worth getting too vain about, in terms of using meds. I can see this looking totally finasteride eon you if you let nature take its course.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm 23 now. The older pictures were taken when I was 20 and 21. Any thoughts on what kind of time line I'm looking at? I can put up with balding in my 30s, but in my early 20s its a bit much, and I don't want to be visibly balding anytime soon. As it is I don't notice any hair loss apart from the forehead.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to start finasteride sometime soon. You might never have to worry about going bald till your old age with it.As of now your frontal hair especially seems vulnerable but you get to make the choice whether to go on meds or not.

Most likely you wont be bald in your 20s but there is a good chance that your hairline might recede further if you decide to do nothing.
