Receding Hairline? High Temples? Thoughts?

My dad is also a NW7, so the odds are not in my favor. Plus, I had to do something to deal with my anxiety. My dermatologist and I decided that taking finasteride was an appropriate treatment, even if more preventative in nature.

Well, I thought I was doing fairly well but I caught the back of my head in a mirror and noticed what appears to be thinning in my crown, or my hair whorl — I’m not sure. Is there anything I can add to the minoxidil? Will using it twice a day make a difference?

Update: I got a super short haircut over the weekend which has led me to wondering if the finasteride is still doing its job…
The temples are concerning. And I can’t tell if my crown is a cowlick or thinning or both. Thoughts? Should I start back dermarolling?

Your hair looks good! You can do minoxidil twice a day for better results. You can needle to help absorption. Something you can add to minoxidil is tretinoin, which makes minoxidil more effective by increasing the presence of the sulfotransferase enzyme. This will give you more bang for your buck with minoxidil.

You are still stable. Grow it out more and it will look the same as the other ones previously.

Thanks! I’ll start minoxidil twice a day. Maybe needle once a week? I actually use tretinoin for acne, so that would be an easy add, assuming it’s the right kind (I use a cream).
Yeah definitely will do. I typically don’t get it cut this short.

I’m 30 — from photos, it seems that he was at least thinning by that time.
Knowing your father’s (or whichever bald relative’s) pattern and timeline is important so you can gauge what might or might not be happening to you as you age. It’s also entirely possible you didn’t inherit the genetics for a full NW7 final pattern. So many genes are involved it’s impossible to predict. I was in a somewhat similar situation at your age so I can relate.
Based on your older posts I doubt you needed to start Finasteride as early as you did. Regardless, you kept your hair through your 20s and are doing well on Finasteride now so congrats! Yeah, my mom’s dad had a mostly full head of hair until he passed. I’m glad I started finasteride when I did even if it just helped put my mind at ease knowing I was doing almost all that I could do. I’m certainly happy that it hasn’t gotten significantly worse, just something I want to keep an eye on.

I started finasteride when my hair was as bad as yours. I don't think you started too early with finasteride. If you have no family history of hair loss then I would hesitate more but I tested I had the balding gene so I know this was the only way to treat it.

Quick update. Just wanted to share my progress now that I’ve been on finasteride for 3.5 years. I recently got a haircut and that always makes me second-guess the level to which I’ve maintained.
Hair looks healthy and strong. The hairline looks stronger than your photos from 2017. Crown looks better too. For what it’s worth your 2017 pics looked pretty good too. You caught it early.

This brings me to question, should someone take finasteride even if they aren’t balding (or balding aggressively) as prevention and/or have a peace of mind?

Probably. Percent of balding men is high, especially as a caucasian. Something along the lines of the age you are is the percent of men who are bald. Ex., 30 percent of men are balding aggressively at age 30. And 50 at 50. I wish I started taking it at age 18.
