My dr seems to think proscar does not work on the front end of our hair and only works on crown

He also says minoxidil is for crown also

Why the hell do people keep saying this? Do any hair loss experts actuallly believe that these products work better on the crown then other areas?

Wouldnt the product work all over where there is head hair? GOd this sh*t is so silly!

I totally agree..

If you look at many success stories, you can see that they also have regrowth in the front and somewhat on the temples.. So I choose to believe that! :)

It works better for me on the crown but it does work on the
front to some extent.

Didn't work in the front for me, but possibly maintained my crown, although I never had a problem with my crown.

It does work in the front, to a certain degree. If you just have an agressive case of recession it might not work as well as you want.

The clinical trials with minoxidil only looked at the crown. so the FDA would not allow claims that minoxidil also works in front. If memory serves, the finasteride studies were silent on this issue.

A reasonable rule of thumb is that medical treatment usually does not grow new hair on shiney-smooth areas. This includes in front of hair-lines. Not that growth in front of the hair line does not happen, but the best thing is to treat it as a bonus and not a primary goal of treatment.

However, growth up to the hair line in front is quite common.

Below is a study showing finasteride to be effective in the front:

J Am Acad Dermatol. 1999 Jun;40(6 Pt 1):930-7.

"Finasteride in the treatment of men with frontal male pattern hair loss." Leyden J, Dunlap F, Miller B, Winters P, Lebwohl M, Hecker D, Kraus S, Baldwin H, Shalita A, Draelos Z, Markou M, Thiboutot D, Rapaport M, Kang S, Kelly T, Pariser D, Webster G, Hordinsky M, Rietschel R, Katz HI, Terranella L, Best S, Round E, Waldstreicher J.
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA.

BACKGROUND: Finasteride, a specific inhibitor of type II 5alpha-reductase, decreases serum and scalp dihydrotestosterone and has been shown to be effective in men with vertex male pattern hair loss. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of finasteride 1 mg/day in men with frontal (anterior/mid) scalp hair thinning. METHODS: This was a 1-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed by a 1-year open extension. Efficacy was assessed by hair counts (1 cm2 circular area), patient and investigator assessments, and global photographic review. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in hair count in the frontal scalp of finasteride-treated patients (P < .001), as well as significant improvements in patient, investigator, and global photographic assessments. Efficacy was maintained or improved throughout the second year of the study. Finasteride was generally well tolerated. CONCLUSION: In men with hair loss in the anterior/mid area of the scalp, finasteride 1 mg/day slowed hair loss and increased hair growth.

If your front is miniaturizing but not advanced Propecia/Rogaine can work just as well! As for the crown the reason it may better because there is usally a lot of of miniaturization for a long time and lots of hairs so that may give you better results but the front goes away really fast hence recession! But if let's say you are a NW3 and want to go back to NW2 it's really rare medications will do that for you!
