"What happened to you when you switched? what was your situation if you dont mind me asking?"
i had 6 good years on finasteride age 30 to 36. no more hairloss and thickening of existing hair.
then at year 6 suddenly over a 2 to 3 months period ,started thinning again a fast rate. I was taking 1.25 of brand proscar everyday. no other meds/topicals.
at age 36 I Switched to dutasteride, best decision I made.
Hair thickened again and a bit even more than on finasteride. I am taking 0.5 mg a day of brand Avodart. Now 40, hairline is the same as it was when i was age 30 and a bit thicker.
Never had a shed.
dutasteride blocks much more DHT than finasteride and is more stable (less variations over the day) because of the long half life. I dont see how people can claim that it does not work.
At worst it should slow down the rate of hairloss, but that does not mean that it does not work. Hard to judge unless you have a twin brother.
People that complain about dutasteride maybe had high expectations of regrowth. Maybe they would have had a much more rapid hairloss if not on the drug and only have one side of the story. The twin brother study did cleary show that dutasteride works.
Any way, sides and results depend on the person, but I dont see why no one would at least give it a try for 2-3 months. I dont see any explanations why it would "destroy" any hair.
If DHT is your main cause, after a month on dutasteride you should feel the hair being thicker at the base of it, even if it does not translate into visible results right away.
If you had no results on finasteride then yes, maybe DHT is not the main cause and dutasteride will not help I guess, unless it is a dosage issue.
When dutasteride will stop working in the future for me, meaning that becasue of my age the hair are so sensitive to DHT that even a little amount is enough to cause hairloss, I will increase the dosage to 2 mg. Hopefully something else like ASC-J9 becomes available before.
