Hi there, this is my first post, but i've been lurking and searching for a month or so.

I'm a 28 yr. old male with pretty significant thinning on the top of my head. (evenly thinning on the top of my head).

I feel like this is the worst type of thinning. i'd much rather have just a bald spot or a receeding line around the temples.

I've been using propecia 1mg tablets once per day for about 4-5 years with nioxin use 3-4 times per week and 1 saw palmetto capsule daily as well.

I haven't noticed my hair getting any fuller or seen any regrowth. I'm not sure if i'm a non-responder to the medication or if its keeping me from losing all my hair!

I've read about Dutasteride, spironolactone, and minoxidil and tons of others.

What should i be using? I've recently switched from nioxin to nizorel 1%.

Any help would be much appreciated!! i've seen pictures of some who post here, and i would pay millions to be in their shoes, as my problem seems much worse.

You should try adding Rogaine Foam to your present regimen. Propecia may have been helping to maintain your hair, but was unable to regrow it. Rogaine (minoxidil) is much better at regrowing hair. So I'd say that's one of the key things you are missing. Try that for 4 months or 6 months and see what happens.

will i get excessive "shedding" with the foam? how soon will that start and how long will it last?

i should add that im getting married in 6.5 months and dont want to be going through major shedding for the big day.

should i wait and start the rogaine foam after the wedding?

There will always be shedding when combating male pattern baldness. There's just no way around it. So if you want to start with treatments get ready for shedding.

It's hard for me to say since I didn't experience ANY shedding whatsoever with Rogaine Foam. Even before switching to the foam from the liquid version a month ago, I experienced none of the sides or shedding that I see folks here complaining about. Only thing I had experienced were the flakes after it dries, and that was with the liquid version. With the Foam, its been so much better since it dries in minutes, is much easier to apply, and it leaves no flakes.

From reading this forum, it seems as though those who experience sheds, only experience them for a short term period. So maybe for a couple weeks (I think that's what it even says on the Rogaine Foam booklet). But again, thats just my guess. You have to experiment with it yourself though, as everyone responds differently to the medication. If you lets say started on the foam today, by your wedding date, you may have substantial regrowth. Or you may not... And I wouldn't be too concerned about shedding though. Keep in mind though that the Rogaine Foam has an 85% success rate in regrowing hair within a 4-month time span.

well it doesnt hurt to pump it up with dutasteride, and i would start with the foam, right now, because if its 6 1/2 months untill you get married you can get some good growth with the rogain.

Did you not get any regrowth/thickening from the finasteride? I've read some non-responders to finasteride have had results from dutasteride. Are you currently using generic 1mg finasteride, paying full retail, or chopping 5mg proscar into fifths? Do some searches, I've seen in the other threads that these indivduals went cold turkey from finasteride right over to dutasteride.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten on minoxidil yet. I have thinning similar to yours but only in the temple area and the vertex. I'm using Spectral DNC for almost 10 weeks now and I definitely notice a new field of pigmented vellous hairs in this area now. To help cut costs I'm also using Rogaine Foam on the back side of the scalp. As far as the sheds go I DID notice some shedding from about week 4 to week 7. If I didn't actually know what was going on (minoxidil pushing out dead hairs in telogen phase) I could've been scared off and quit the stuff too. 6.5 months IS enough time to get some decent regrowth before the wedding! Rogaine Foam and/or Spectral DNC you can't go wrong!

Good luck and congrats on your Holy Matrimony! :)

fairtax,

where can i read more about spectral? is it something i can use with finasteride and minoxidil?

the reason i haven't gone to minoxidil yet is because of the application process. i dont want to be a slave to this. i dont want it to rule my life. but then again, i've never used the foam.

where are people ordering their stuff from? specifically dutasteride and spectral

I would definately add rogaine BEFORE the wedding. Shedding is not that frequent, and even if you get it, the chances are with you that at the wedding day you will have better hair than today.

seadooo,

Spectral DNC IS minoxidil. It also has other hair regrowth ingredients and includes nanosomes to help absorption of the minoxidil. Read about it on their website here: http://www.divineskin.com/spectralDNC/default.asp

Certainly you can use it with finasteride since this is just a topical. I thought about being a "slave to minoxidil" for the rest of my life too but it's not that bad anymore. The Spectral DNC dries in about 1 minute after rubbing it in (ditto for the foam). But like I mentioned, the foam leaves your hair in better shape for the public so unless you can get the spectral on your scalp w/out getting it on your hair, you could use the foam in the mornings and the DNC in the evenings.

The Rogaine foam you can get the cheapest from ebay and here is a big listing of online vendors that sell Spectral DNC for fairly cheap over at froogle.com. I will be making my next purchase from the 3rd cheapest vendor listed there being the Orbit US as their total price including shipping makes it the cheapest. The customer service has been very prompt and courteous with email replies verifying they have the latest version of the Spectral DNC.

But once you start using this stuff it will be second nature. We're spoiled, unlike a year ago when you had to wait for apparently 30 minutes at LEAST for the greasy minoxidil concoction to somewhat dry on the scalp. Plus in 5-10 years there will be better treatments out as well. Speaking of which, have you taken a look at switching from finasteride over to dutasteride yet? Unitedpharmacies.com sells the generic dutas. Good luck!

Ok, I will be completely honest:

This looks pretty bad particularly for someone who is on Propecia. You should definetly think about switching to Dutasteride if you can take the sides. Add some Rogaine (foam) and there you go.

Sure, you will be a slave to these treatments the rest of your life but same goes for brushing your teeths. Good Luck for your wedding. I envy you!

I'm a diffuse thinner too although probably a couple of male pattern baldness years behind you, I'm about to start Rogaine foam next month myself and have seen some amazing results on diffuse thinners within relatively short amounts of time. What was your hair like 4 years ago when you started finasteride?

Seadoo,
I think "FairTaxNow" had a nice reply. I would look into Spectral DNC. I've been doing alot of research and it seems like it is a promising new product. I just ordered some myself. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm 30 and just noticed my hair loss about a year ago. My pattern is similar to yours because I'm thinning over the whole top so we're in the same boat. I've primarily been using Minoxidil in hopes it would do the trick on it's own. It hasn't. I had shedding for ~ 3 weeks and about lost my mind.
:freaked2:
But the shedding eventually stopped. Currently the only side effect is some scalp peeling. But, I started using Nizoral and now the peeling is more manageable.

Anyway, I plan on switching to Spectral DNC because it contains a lot of hair growth remedies all in one. It appears to be a good strategy for now and it may help you since your not currently using anything with Minoxidil.

But don't feel too bad about your hair situation. At least you know your soon to be wife is alright with it and that's what matters. And if it all falls out you could go with the Bruce Willis look. It works for him.

I never thought of this, but you could also maybe use a little bit of topikk or toppik, or whatever that stuff is called the day of the wedding? Granted it's faking out the appearance of your hair though I really don't know anything about it. By the time you have your wedding hopefully you'll have some thickening from the Spectral DNC and/or Foam and maybe just a little bit of that toppik stuff would be needed for the extra effect in pictures and stuff.

I'd stick with the nizoral, add the minoxidil foam and dutasteride, and you'll be golden.
