i was checking out prices for proscar at different pharmacies - one particular pharmacist asked why i was buying proscar (it was obvious he knew the answer before he asked the question) i didn't think he would buy that i had an enlarged prostated - since i'm only 23. so i told him it was for hair loss. He became VERY defensive - and said that he had a lot of experience with this stuff and people should not be using it for hair loss?

He claimed that there was no accurate way to cut the pills, that even machines can't cut them into perfect quarters and that you need take the same amounts consistently for it to work. He also said that there is a special coating on the pill that is supposed to make it difficult to cut them and that if any of it or the inside of the pill is released into the environment, it is supposed to be harmful to any women who ingest it in anyway - which he claimed was impossible to avoid at some level. anyway, this guy was a real hard *** about me not ordering proscar.

Is he right? is it that dangerous to cut the pills and do you really need to take the exact same amount consistently for best results. and am i really going to harm the women that may come in contact with the pills or pill remnants?

Thanks,
Derin

pharmacist is not the person to talk to.

Speak to your doctor. (GP or Derm)

The only harm proscar can do is to a woman who may potentially be pregnant or is already pregnant. The active ingredient finasteride may harm the genital development of the fetus. So proscar should not be handled by PREGNANT or POTENTIALLY PREGNANT women.

It also seems that your pharmacist has his opinion based on previous dosages of proscar. Earlier for enlarged prostate the patients took a 5mg proscar tablet daily.

Whereas for male pattern baldness you need only 1/5th of it.

Again its been tested n approved by "FDA". So dont be scared.

Wow, quite disapointing that a licensed pharmacist spouted such nonsense. He/she should know that minor differences in drug amount on a day to day basis makes no difference.

Geesh, this person a real pharmacist or just an assistant? Seriously, no licensed pharmacist should be this stupid.

He's just covering his ***. Put yourself in his shoes, he is probably worried that you'll come back to him a year later and sue him silly after your gf touches the broken pills and gives birth to a deformed child. Is it worth the risk to him?

Now, I am not necessarily defending him or saying that it is bad to prescribe Proscar for use as a hairloss remedy. I am merely pointing out the fact that this guy is probably just sticking to the letter of the law to protect his livelihood.

Try another pharma. I am sure you could find another who might be more familiar with finasteride and would be willing to fill your order.

True. However, the OP's DOCTOR is the one taking the liability (mostly) since s/he perscribed it...

Exactly. He's just a pill-pusher. Tell the twerp to read the prescription and fill it like a good monkey. If he doesn't, talk to his supervisor and get him fired.
