***UPDATE Nov. 18th***
I'm already in Miami! Follow my progress on the Hair Congress at the following link:
http://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/showthread.php/95298-Hellouser-at-Hair-Congress-2015-in-Miami
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's official! I'm set to go to Miami for the 2015 Hair Congress!
Funds are displayed in Canadian dollars! $1 CAD = $0.75 USD
Goal is $3,650 CAD / $2,825 USD
Note: Your real identity is NOT required when making a donation. You also have the option of keeping your donations anonymous from public view even if you do type in your full name.
Funds will cover the cost of the flight which should be around $600 USD, entrance fee to the congress which is $850 and 4 or 5 nights hotel stay which will depend on me leaving on Saturday, the same day as the last day of the congress, if not, the next day. I'll need to arrive on Nov. 17th, a day early as to not miss anything on the 18th as the congress starts at 11am in the morning. Also, GoFundMe takes 5% of the funds, hence the slight increase. I've already gone out and bought a camera (Canon S120), so we're good on that front, but I still need to go out and buy a couple extra batteries, couple extra SD cards, clamp mount and/or monopod. Hopefully there aren't any further surprises with expenses. Not sure how much extra of my own cash I can pitch in, but I'll try... the camera was a bit costly.
Information about the congress can be found here:
http://hair2015.org/
Preliminary Program Schedule can be found here:
http://www.registration123.com/NAHRS/HAIR2015/media/WCHR2015_PrelimProgram_06-23-15.pdf
Key Speakers:
Dr. Angela M. Christiano
Dr. Sarah E. Millar / Dr. Wilma Bergfeld
Dr. George Cotsarelis
Dr. Ken Washenik
Dr. Takashi Tsuji
Dr. Rolf Hoffman
Dr. Gail Naughton
Dr. Roland Lauster's Team
Histogen's website states Gail Naughton will also be attending AND presenting:
http://www.histogen.com/aboutus/news.htm#event1
I'm also aware that Beren Atac and Gerd Lindner from Dr. Roland Lauster's team will be presenting as well, but will need to confirm when and what time. There's a LOT to cover with essentially all of the worlds BEST researchers at this congress, I can only hope they'll be willing to spare me a little bit of time to answer some of our inquiries. I'm going to have my work cutout for me trying to get a hold of all these presenters and hope for a 1-on-1 Q&A. With that said...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post your questions!
Last year we collected questions from forum members and had Desmond84 ask the researchers. Please state your question and to whom the question is for. I'll need these by Nov. 16th at the latest so I can make a print out and have on hand. I won't have access to a printer after that. I'll be updating this thread with a complete list of questions for the researchers. I'll start:
Dr. Beren Atac / Dr. Gerd Lindner:
- There has been rumour that your team was searching for funding for clinical trials. Can you comment on this and are there still plans for clinical trials for the creation of hair follicles for the treatment of Androgenic Alopecia?
- Can the dermal papilla's created in the lab have a chance to grow fully terminal hairs if injected/implanted into the scalp? Are CD200, CD34, PGE2 etc. taken into account when tested in the lab?
Dr. George Cotsarelis:
- How do you plan on using FGF-9 with Follica's method?
- Would Follicept's vehicle allow you to bypass injections of FGF-9?
- Does the introduction of FGF-9 require Follica to start the trials all over again?
- Does FGF-9 on it's own create follicles or are the growth factors from wounding or other agents still necessary for follicle formation?
- Has the FGF-9 method been tried in humans?
- Has Follica been able to grow thick terminal hair in human scalp clinical trials?
- How do you feel about the 21st Century Act and will it benefit the release of Follica's treatment or Kythera's setipiprant?
- What levels of PGD2 are present in early Androgenetic Alopecia vs. late Androgenetic Alopecia?
Dr. Angela Christiano:
- Dr. Claire Higgins recently mentioned that the dermal papilla has to be put into the dermas to work and there are some rollers with spikes being developed to do that. Can you comment on this?
- New York Times posted an article about you starting a company called Rapunzel. Can you tell us more about it?
- Are there any similarities in FPB to male pattern baldness? As in, elevated levels of PGD2 or something else?
- Can you comment about your findings with 3D Dermal Papilla cells you were using in mice for human hair? Could this have any bearing with Rapunzel?
Dr. Wilma Bergfeld:
- Can you tell us more about Samumed's phase 2B trial and why it was needed?
- Are you aware of the 21st century act and do you feel it will benefit Samumed in a faster release? Other thoughts?
Dr. Gail Naughton:
- How far are you in clinical trials for Histogen's HSC complex?
- Does HSC have any relation to hypoxia?
- Other than capital/money, what in your view is the biggest obstacle in getting your HSC treatment to the market? There has been speculation that there are problems with controlling cell treatments to create "good" cells vs. "bad" cells.
- What do you say to people who say that even hair that is regrown through HSC will still be susceptible to DHT/PGD2 production?
- Have you seen any correlation or is there any reason to believe that this treatment is more effective on younger patients than older patients? Or vice versa?
Dr. Rolf Hoffmann:
- A recent article claimed shisheido will release a cure in 2018, can you comment on this? Furthermore the article states: "First medical staff will take some cells to reprogram as induced pluripotent stem cells, the scientific breakthrough that won Shinya Yamanaka the Nobel Prize and a fancy new washing machine back in 2012. At the moment it seems fibroblasts are the go-to ones for the job. These can be found in joints and scar tissue. That sounds a wee bit painful but there is already research into alternative methods such as getting them from urine. Then doctors will remove a piece of your scalp a few millimeters in diameter and just as deep as your roots. This will yield a small sample of the cells which trigger hair growth." Is this the method bring pursued by shiehido? Or is it just the replicel technology?
- What is the status of Replicel's clinical trials?
- When will trials start?
- What is the status of Shiseido's clinical trials using Replicel's technology?
- Any details on the Shiseido trials (sample size, repeat injections, dosage, etc).
- I recall Mr. Hall during his interview with Spencer from Bald Truth Talk stating that Phase II would be dosing down. Was this a poor choice of words, or are they using a lower dosage (cells/injection)? My assumption is that the cells are losing their inductive properties, in which case fewer (more potent) may be better
- In their original study with mice (pg 1269) they found injecting the cell associated with wounding yielded superior results. Have they considered wounding with humans
- Has Shiseido enhanced or modified the procedure to their knowledge? I believe the use of iPS cells was a mistranslation but otherwise
General Questions For Everyone:
- Will treatments for men also benefit women diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A word from me:
I want to say a BIG thank you to everyone donating and helping out. I have to admit, I'm kind of nervous undertaking this task. I'm about to surrounded with the world's best researchers... I'm already feeling the pressure.

***UPDATE: Thurs. Oct. 15 ***
I just got a reply from Dr. Lauster's team and Beren Atac has agreed to meet up! Can't wait!
***UPDATE: Sat. Oct. 17***
Apparently Follicum is going to be at the congress. Source:
http://www.follicum.se/en/news/foll...he-world-congress-for-hair-research-in-miami/
Any thoughts if I should attend their presentation if it doesn't conflict with timing/viewing of another presentation?
***UPDATE: Wed. Oct. 21***
I've sent a bit of a lengthy email to Dr. Angela Christiano today explaining the cause and asking for permission to record some of the presentations. Please keep your fingers crossed for this, I really hope we're given the green light on this! This is essentially the most important aspect of our initiative. Thanks everyone!
Also, we've been able to raise $2,130 as of today! Thanks again to everyone for all the contributions!
***UPDATE: Fri. Oct. 23rd***
Hotel is booked! I actually booked it last week before I had the available funds, took a bit of a gamble.
I've also yet to hear back from Dr. Christiano. I'll be making another attempt to reach out to her with a follow up email on Monday. If I don't hear back from her by Wednesday, I'm going to try to give her a call directly. Gotta get that approval to record the presentations.
***UPDATE: Mon. Nov. 9th***
Flight, hotel and congress admission all booked and paid for! I'm all set to go!
***UPDATE: Thurs. Nov. 12th***
One last email request about recording video sent to Dr. Christiano, Dr. Bergfeld and Dr. Hordinsky. Also emailed Dr. Cotsarelis' assisstant, Dr. Naughton and Tammy George from Replicel to meet with their respective researchers.
***UPDATE: Fri. Nov. 13th***
Confirmed for a meeting with Dr. Rolf Hoffmann, Dr. Kevin McElwee and V.P. Lee Buckler from Replicel on Thursday!
