Not washing your hair ever?

I've not washed my hair for about 10 days now, and i'm liking it. I hate the way it goes all fluffy and flyaway when you're in the wind, or when you sleep on it and end up looking like a hobo in the morning. When we were all monkeys we didn't wash our hair and got along fine...

Basically what I want to know - why the obsession with washing hair regularly? Can anyone think of any negatives of not washing it... EVER?

I feel an experiment coming on...

I've told this story before here so I hate to repeat myself but I have a friend that went months without washing his hair...he would infact only rinse it with water occasionaly and it looked fantastic. He's got thinning hair and his hair never looked better than it did then. He got complimented on it all the time. He now went back to washing it daily and it looks like dead, thinning hair again. This experiment might be a great idea for you...I'd try it but I think I'd feel too gross and my head would get too itchy...

I have decided to was my hair only 2 time per week now. I used to wash each morning. I was them on Sunday night and Thursday night. Reason to wash them in before bed time is that i have more time to let the Nizoral 2% do his job. Yes I am using Nizoral 2% 2X per week. No other shampoo in betweek.

My hair has never looked that good.

I do rinse in the morning though, but no shampoo.

Hmm interesting. Does it not feel greasy at all in between?

That would affect my confidence if I done it to be honest.

My hair was never that oily, so I guess that's how. After 10 days it doesn't look lank; just kind of as if you had just run a bit of styling wax through it. It does pick up smells (cigarette smoke particularly) but it generally goes after a bit of fresh air. I've noted in the past that dreadlocks (essentially really unwashed hair) don't smell, so if you've got an odour problem, the likelihood is its nothing to do with your hair (or perhaps you're an unusually smelly bastard...) One thing I've noticed as well is that my scalp feels really healthy - no itching.

well keep truckin then!

likely that when you wash your hair after 10 days or so your going to see hundreds upon hundreds of hair fall out.

I dont think i could deal with that.

when i was in my late teens to early 20's i never washed my hair. only time it got washed was at the hairdresser. I would only rinse thoroughly in the shower.

My hair looked and felt great. My scalp did not itch and hair was always clean. Hairdressers always commented what healthy hair i had. Then at 23 i got a job, grew up a little bit, for some reason started wahsing my hair regularly. It was about 6 months later i started noticing my temples receding and have been on propecia since.

These days i must wash every second day at least or my scalp itches horribly :(

Also, as im applying minoxidil and spironolactone twice daily, i dont really want any residue from that stuff to build up.

re:

When I was early on in finasteride/minoxidil use I washed my hair maybe every third day. When I did wash it, at least 100 hairs came out, very disturbing to say the least. I have no idea if not washing helped because I was in the middle of an early massive shed so I was wearing a hat everyday and losing ground. For me, not washing everydday would be tough because I use a little fructus volume everyday and the build of minoxidil would most likely dry out my head here in the cold dry winter months. However, assuming it does not bother your look or the condition of your scalp, I cannot see any reason why washing everyday is a must. If you get bed head then just run your hair through some warm water and comb it out. This may wash out a few hair but far less then shampooing (if thats a word).

Bryan had posted a study earlier that shows that washing 1000 times a day or so or not washing at all has no effect on the sebum production. So wash your hair as you wish. It has no relevance to hair loss.

Sebum production is under androgenic control, so antiandrogens and/or estrogens should help reduce it. The trick is finding an effective topical without systemic effects (the same problem we have with hairloss).

I don't think that avoiding daily shampooing is a good idea. Just my opinion.

Kligman and his colleagues did some testing several years by allowing test subjects to go a full month without shampooing, and monitored certain parameters like scale formation (dandruff) and bacterial growth on the scalp; when all was said and done, they concluded that going without shampooing isn't really harmful, just cosmetically unpleasing.

I have washed my hair every day since I was 18, I am now 29 and have been noticing hairloss for about a year. I would conclude that in my case, shampooing had no specific detrimental effect on my hairloss situation. If it did, it sure took it's time to kick in.

Shampooing your hair has no relation to hairloss.

If that were the case, then why has humanity been suffering from male pattern baldness for the last several milleniums?

Why was Socrates (who I might add was the wisest man ever) bald? He was one of the poorest men in Athens, Greece, and I'm sure he never shampooed. Maybe he took a bath every once in a while, but probably rare.

The point is perhaps not that never washing your hair will stop male pattern baldness, but that it conceivably has an effect on scalp health. Look at the ingredients on a typical bottle of shampoo. It's not beyond the realms of probability that some of it might not be the best for your scalp... I've not got a girlfriend right now, and thus anyone who can complain about my non-hair washing, so I think I'll give it a go.

Tramps seem to be pretty hairy as well u know :hairy:

shampoo is quite a harsh substance for the most part and using it everyday will give your scalp quite a beating. overwashing skin with soaps and extra hot water is unhealthy for it, but does seem to be the norm these days. any damage done to skin is damage done to hair , as hair is just an extension of the scalp in the first place. most guides to good skin health recommend less frequent showers, and colder water.

and Aplunk, shampoo being a relatively recent addition to the human habitat does not rule out it also being able to exacerbate our condition. Though obviously not the underlying cause, overshampooing could definately be helping it on its way

Washing your hair has no effects in hairloss. But is certainely has an effect on personal hygeine. Dont you use styling products? Anyone who does will know you need to wash your hair everyday to avoid looking like a greasy tramp.
