nizoral shed

Do you think that because it has regrowth potential about as strong as minoxidil 2%, that a shed can occur with initiation of its use?

Dont know. The theories on shedding are just that, theroies. No one really has the skinny on why and how we shed. Some of us dont either.

irritation with 1% nizoral

Hi
I started 5% minoxidil and nizoral at the same time. I got a ton of dandruff and Ive stopped minoxidil for about 2 weeks now. I still get flaking the days after I use nizoral. Anyone else experience this problem or know if it will go way with prolonged use?

nizoral irritation

Don't leave nizoral for longer than five minutes. I also looked on Dr. Lee's website and read about his nizoral 2% and tsal shampoo formula. He wrote that to avoid itching and dryness you should use with nizoral conditioner. Same thing happened to me.

Thanks fro. Im pretty sure I didnt go over 5 mins. Maybe my scalp is sensitive and I need to build up to 5 minutes. I only use it every 3 or 4 days with selsun blue and a generic volumizing shampoo in between. I think I'll switch the selsun blue with T-sal.

definitely do not use selsun blue with the nizoral. you may also be getting a reaction from the combination of the different active ingredients in nizoral and selsun. i also made the mistake of trying to use nizoral with another dandruff shampoo(head and shoulders) on the same night, and my scalp felt like it had been dipped in poison ivy. tsal, however, seems to be synergistic with ketoconazole. at least this seems to be the case with a lot of people suffering with male pattern baldness.

A quesiton about "names"

I just started treatment for Alopecia Androgenetica. My doctor (spescialist in hair/skin) recomended using 1/4 tablet of Proscar once a day, making it a 1,25mg dose Finasteride. He did not recomend using Regaine at the same time, because he thought it wouldn't give me any added results. About a fer weeks ago I notices my scalp to be very itchy and "sore" of some reason, and I consulted my local medication-store. They recommended a shampoo called Fungoral which, according to the ingrediens, consists of 20mg/ml of Ketoconazol. So my quesion is; is Fungoral the same shampoo as Nisim??? Just with a different name? It's supposed to be used twice a week for four weeks, and then once a week as long as necssesary (it's reddish, if that helps to recognize it.. :) )

Thanks in advance, and thanks for making such a great site for us "hair-troublers" :hairy:

That red shampoo that you purchased is nizoral 2%. It has been shown to be effective in treating scalp conditions such as yours, and also useful in a regimen for the treatment of hair loss. Follow the doctor's orders. He obviously knows what he's talking about.
As for the minoxidil, you will receive added benefit if your goal is regrowth. But start with the proscar and nizoral.
For the nizoral, it might be a little drying. On the site http://www.morphollica.com, the author gives suggestions on how to condition hair as you shampoo with nizoral by adding a few drops of emu oil to nizoral.

Ketaconazole is a powerful anti-fungal aswell as a mild anti-androgen. Definately useful to androgenic alopecia sufferers.

head & Shoulders/zinc shampoo is proven to be EFFECTIVE!

I saw this interesting article on pubmed,

IT LOOKS LIKE A ZINC/SHAMPOO CAN BE A REAL BENEFIT IN COMBATING male pattern baldness! VERY INTERESTING!

Anybody comments on this?

ARTICLE:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The effects of minoxidil, 1% pyrithione zinc and a combination of both on hair density: a randomized controlled trial.

Berger RS, Fu JL, Smiles KA, Turner CB, Schnell BM, Werchowski KM, Lammers KM.

Hill Top Research, Inc., East Brunswick, NJ, USA.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies of antidandruff shampoos or tonics containing antifungal or antibacterial agents produced effects suggestive of a potential hair growth benefit. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this 6-month, 200-patient, randomized, investigator-blinded, parallel-group clinical study was to assess the hair growth benefits of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo. The efficacy of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo (used daily), was compared with that of a 5% minoxidil topical solution (applied twice daily), a placebo shampoo and a combination of the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo and the 5% minoxidil topical solution. METHODS: Two hundred healthy men between the ages of 18 and 49 years (inclusive) exhibiting Hamilton-Norwood type III vertex or type IV baldness were enrolled. Total hair counts, the primary efficacy measure, were obtained using fibre-optic microscopy and a computer-assisted, manual hair count method. Secondary measures of efficacy included assessments of hair diameter, as well as patient and investigator global assessments of improvement in hair growth. These were based on photographs of the scalp using both midline and vertex views. RESULTS: Hair count results showed a significant (P < 0.05) net increase in total visible hair counts for the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo, the 5% minoxidil topical solution, and the combination treatment groups relative to the placebo shampoo after 9 weeks of treatment. The relative increase in hair count for the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo was slightly less than half that for the minoxidil topical solution and was essentially maintained throughout the 26-week treatment period. No advantage was seen in using both the 5% minoxidil topical solution and the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo. A small increase in hair diameter was observed for the minoxidil-containing treatment groups at week 17. Assessments of global improvements by the patients and investigator generally showed the benefit of 5% minoxidil. The benefit of the 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo used alone tended (P < 0.1) to be apparent only to the investigator. CONCLUSIONS: Hair count results show a modest and sustained improvement in hair growth with daily use of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo over a 26-week treatment period.

Nizoral shampoo... but what conditioner?

I was wondering if its OK to use a conditioner with Nizoral or are you supposed to use nizoral without conditioner? I heard someone mention a nizoral conditioner, but this doesnt seem to be sold OTC.

I was hoping I could use Head and shoulders conditioner, it has Pyr Zinc as an active ingredient.. Or maybe if thats not to be used, does anyone have a suggestion on what one should be?

I would not combine the H and S cond with nizoral.

Do a search and I am sure you purchase Nizoral cond. online.

No, you are mixing two different anti dandruf ingredients in one application. I would not be sure either one would work in that case.

Who I am / Initial response to Nizoral Shampoo after a week

Hey there friends, I'm new to the forum here and came here after doing some research and reading on general hair loss related topics, etc. I found Hairlosstalk.com to be a terrific site and I believe that they're objective in the information they're giving people. Like anyone else interested in the subject, I've come across alot of hype and garbage out there that doesn't seem to be worth much. From what I can tell here, this seems to be one of the best resources out there.

I'm 31 years old and have been wearing long hair off and on for about 10 years now (I started growing my first long main in '93 when I was 20). In about that amount of time (10 years or so), I've noticed a very, very gradual recession of the frontal hairline around the temples. Looking at the Norwood classifications, I'm about a Norwood 2 or so. Here's a picture of it from about April 2003 time:

http://bdc.cyberosity.com/pictures/OldP ... 150213.JPG

It's nothing serious as there's no thinning on the top or crown anywhere, yet I'm missing hair at the temples that I used to have in my late teens and early 20's and my hairline is definitely very gradually marching its way upward from the temples. The recession doesn't seem to be speeding up although I'm beginning to notice it. Since I'd like to keep the hair on my head (I'm sure like most men on here), I decided to do some research and experiment with some products. Last week, I purchased Nizoral shampoo 1% OTC. I've used it a few times. Here's the list of things I've noticed with it:

- I've had constant psoriasis-like flaking, inflammation, and itching at the temples and frontal hairline (as well as behind the ears) for several years. After just a week, it's all but gone. I've usually had problems with itchy scalp for the past few years but I haven't itched one single time since using this. In particular, the areas at the frontal hairline and top of the temples, as well as the back of the ears, where there's been this heavy inflammation and itching, there's a cluster of shorter hair (about an 1" long or so) remaining.
- My scalp is nowhere near as oily as it used to be. After about a day, my head looks like it's been dipped in an old oil change pan. Now, however, it's not anywhere near as oily or greasy looking or feeling.
- The first time I used Nizoral, I noticed a rather profound amount of dandruff flaking off after I got out of the shower. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
- This is entirely subjective, and I can't put my finger on it, but my scalp _feels_ better. I don't know why but it feels like the way it did when I was 20 years old. It's not itching, it's not 'stiff' or tight, and it just feels plain good. I can definitely tell a difference. I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect knowing that I'm using a medicated shampoo or not, but I can definitely feel a difference.
- My shedding rate has decreased dramatically. Infact, I was quite shocked and surprised after the first couple of times of using this shampoo. My hair seems to feel better, also, and is more resilient to falling out as far as I can tell (my hair is quite long so I can surely see it).

It's almost as if this shampoo is exactly what I needed. I haven't noticed any regrowth of hair as I believe that will probably take months to accomplish if that's in my cards so to speak. However, I do have small, non-pigmented, vellous hairs in the temple areas that I can see fairly well.

Has anybody had the same effects from using this stuff? How efficacious is it long-term? What can I use to remove the presumably left-over flaky, dead skin from my scalp?

Very satisfied Nizoral customer,

B

nizoral only?

Hi.

I'm at about the 15 month mark on propecia and have been using nizoral every few days as well, as suggested. I've noticed now an increase in shedding and itchyness on my scalp. Any suggestions on something to help with this increased itchyness? Would adding something like head and shoulders on the non-nizoral days be ok? Should i perhaps see my doctor for something more potent?

Thanks.

I would make sure I am using 1% nizoral and try it every three days not every two.

Folligen spray helps tame itch also.

Are you using minoxidil??

I'll have to check on the type of nizoral i'm using. No, i'm not using Minoxidil, just propecia and nizoral. Up until recently things have been great but lately I've noticed increased shedding and itchyness. After reading up on it today, I was really considering buying some Folligen. What do you think?
