Hey board,
I've been a long time reader on this board and have posted very rarely.

To give you a general history on my situation. My father has amazingly thick hair and he is 54. My older brother who is 27 has amazingly thick hair. I'm 23 and have noticed I've lost hair since junior high. I've had a bout with Allopecia Areata right behind my left ear but thats been all healed and that area is full now. Since now, I've considered it very normal as I had alot of volume on the top of my head so I thought there was a relationship b/w the amount of hair and the amount of shedding.

I've noticed recently (or more so for the last 2 years - but I've pretty much been in denial) that I'm losing volume at the top of my head near the back. My temples are totally fine. THere is no male pattern baldness genes in my family. Both of my grandparents from both sides of the family have full hair as well.

I honestly don't know what is going on with me. I don't feel like seeing my derma because I hate seeing the doctor.

I am thinking of purchasing rogaine tomorrow and using it. Does anyone have any suggestions on applying it?? Does it have any side effects??

I really hate balding and I cannot see myself shaving my head because I don't have the right look. I refuse to be a peanut head.

PLease respond with some suggestions. I will not go on Propecia as well b/c I don't want to take something that may screw my hormones up and cost me money as well. If nature has called me to bald, then I will let it take its course.

The hairloss industry is bullshit anyways. There should have been a cure somewhere down the line but they want men to purchase medicine per month so they can continually fuel the multi-billion industry.

Not only is the money factor but I don't want to be chained to taking some sort of medicine everyday for the rest of my existence.

I'm going to try Rogaine to see if I respond, if not, I'm gonna probably go live in the mountains. I know that everyone is going to say shave your head and hit the gym. But thats stupid. Think about it. I saw a bald guy on teh train the other day with a World Health Club bag and he just looked stupid. You could tell he went to the gym to work out just to cover up for his shiny peanut head which reflected the sunlight coming in through the window. The peanut head look is not that great.

I need advice, badly. I'm going to start investing in a cabin in the mountains or something.

I totally agree, I think there should be a cure instead of putting us in such position.

Interesting perspective, often voiced but never substantiated.

In medicine, cures are almost non-existent. Treatment is the rule.

The only "cure" would be a genetic alteration. You must understand that even a pill or topical that shuts down male pattern baldness 100% would still require daily or frequent application. Your genes are your genes.

People never seem to realize that....

Indeed and how few cures really exist in medicine. Yet, men think that male pattern baldness should be one of them because, we REALLY want it!

Your genes are your genes.

Thats pretty obvioius. I'm not on this board to fight with people or to have people dissect my posts. I'm on this board to try to get some advice on my situation. If you look at it like "your genes are your genes" attitude, why spend the money on stopping something thats going to eventually happen anyways?

Back to the topic on hand. Has anyone had any adverse effects to Rogaine? Also, what happens if I get off Rogaine? Does shedding increase? Thanks guys.

Minoxidil has minimal side effects, esp when used as directed (the most common mistake is to use too much minoxidil. More will not give you better results!),

There is NO agreement at all on shedding and minoxidil that I can see. Some claim it increases immediate shedding, some don't. I have been using it for nearly 20 yrs without a shed.

If you shed, very likely it is temp.

There is no real substitute for minoxidil right now so hey, go for it!

No one is dissecting your post, though I do find conspiracy theories comical. I've been here a long time and I'd like to think I've helped a lot of people between the public postings and the private conversations. I am not attempting to "shoot you down" or anything silly like that.

The fact is that while genetic alteration would be the only true one-shot "cure," there are still a number of working treatments that give you a good shot of maintaining your haircount if used reguarly. Your genes are still your genes, but if you can slow down the chemical proccess resulting from your genetic makeup, you can potentially keep your hair. At this point, that is a viable option, and we don't even know how male pattern baldness works! Imagine if someone discovers the true mechanism.

Oh, and as for Rogaine -

I highly suggest you try it once and maybe get a faster drying forumla like Dr. Lee's. Rogaine takes FOREVER to dry and can really put a damper on your day.

Use the dropper and comb your hair forward. Apply to the crown and spread the liquid lightly with dry fingertips.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try some tonight. I now am anticipating the agony of purchasing the product at the drugstore and getting the look - "you're doomed."
