I'm 45 y/o. Up until four months ago I considered myself an NW2. My hairline had retreated a quarter to half an inch the past 20+ years, and I lost thickness from my teen years and early 20s. However, I still had good coverage. The past four months have been disturbing. I am losing twice as many hairs per day than ever before, maybe more. I am starting to show a bald spot and losing the thickness on the top of my head, front to back. At this rate I will go from having a decent head of hair to showing male pattern baldness in a matter of months.

I met with a very prominent hair transplant doctor this past week. In addition to learning about his practice I wanted to know what type of regimen I should be on. Here is what we discussed:

1. I have been using a HairMax Laser Comb. He said I wasted my money.

2. If I take Propecia it will take a year to see if it has helped. If it does, it will most likely only be on the crown.

3. Minoxidil may or may not work. He wasn't enthusiastic about it.

I would love to get some feedback about his comments and what has worked/not worked for you. Also, if the laser comb is ineffective, does that mean all LLLTs are ineffective.

Thanks in advance!

he's right on all three points.

If I were you, at your age, I'd either say to hell with the hairloss and go bald gracefully, or start taking Finasteride and possibly Minoxidil if you can bear the regime, but don't expect it to be a miracle cure. If you have the money, you could consider a hair transplant

in the meantime, nanofibres are also very good for concealing crown balding

I would go on Propecia for now if you want to slow things down. Hair loss can start at any age and even in your 40's it can go fast too. Propecia might help but be prepared to get worse possibly. I honestly think the only thing that can restore the hairline is a transplant but you should be on Propecia for about a year before you consider one. I just found some photos I took for my hair transplant consult in 2009 and at that time, I thought my hair line was bad. Now in 2012 I just did a comparison and it is definitely worse to the point I am getting a hair transplant next year. I have fought the battle for too long and Propecia, Proxiphen, and minoxidil will not save the hairline. It may slow things down but it will not save it. I honestly would not mess with minoxidil as it might give you some nice thickness for a few years but then the results start to taper to a disappointing point. Your crown area should respond well to Propecia but the hairline is very tough to maintain.

what about wig/hairpiece as a cheaper alternative to hair transplant?

I would assume theat the technology has moved on from the days of the old fake-looking toupees. Since I can't afford an hair transplant, it's the route I'll probably go down when my male pattern baldness starts getting untenable

A good quality hairpiece is not cheaper than a hair transplant in the long run, my father must change his hairpiece every 6 months and pay 600€ each time, so in three years, you reach the cost of a hair transplant. He's been wearing a hair piece for more than 30 years, do the math.

great. so even a plain old wig is out of reach for most of us :(
