My Hairline Has Gotten So Much Worse On Finasteride

Hi I'm age 20 my hair is rapidly thinning. Been on 1mg finasteride 5 months in. Currentlty shedding quite a bit never shed noticeably before finasteride. I remember the minute i started taking finasteride my hair got thinner. I took it to prevent it getting worse whilst I was in the very early stages because i thought go on £15 a month to keep my barnet is worth it. My hair is getting ruined. My thinning shows a NW3 pattern but the weird thing is is that my hair in the middle and back are very thick, looks like im skipping NW2 altogether because of how far bck the thinning goes. I do think my libido has gone up recently, my skin is a bit oilier, feels like I'm 14 again. Which has made me worried that I have that hyperandrogenicity. No one in my family went bald, both grandads and my dad. I have my grandads hair but ive seen a pic of him and hes a small NW2 at 30. Guess i must just be a freak in my family. Question is should i stop finasteride before it gets worse or carry for the year. I don't want to use minoxidil because Im too lazy to use twice a day but reckon ill have to soon. Pics show hair when i started finasteride and 5 months on. Bit of a shitter. Anyone elses hairline get really bad and then get better aswell from what uve heard the nes whos hairline thickens never see anything like this.

Your hair looked fine before...

I can see there is minor shedding at the temples (look less dense). I think if you are using a treatment for almost 6 months and see no benefit, just a gradual worsening, it is probably not the treatment for you. I do not believe in waiting a year. 3 months is enough to know for Minoxidil and 6 is enough for Finasteride.

What I would do is get your DHT levels checked. If they are still normal or even high, then you know your answer and may want to try Duasteride three times a week.

If your DHT levels are low, then you should apply a topical anti androgen for a few months and continue with the Finasteride. Then gradually withdraw the topical and continue with the Finasteride and reevaluate.

I agree with Retinoid.

Also may not want to wait too long to hop on minoxidil if those temples are that fresh. You can use a topical aa to slow or stop the thinning and hope that they will regrow but the more recent the loss the better chance you have of those areas filling back in. For this reason I wouldn’t even chance it I would start trying to stimulate growth asap. You can get the foam and two little dots in those areas will take 30 seconds a day...

May seem like a lot but if finasteride or duta start working you can ween off the aa and with a 5ar inhibitor people tend to keep their minoxidil gains for a long time.

Your hair still looks fantastic and even removing those thinning hairs you would still only be a Norwood 2. I honestly don't see a difference in your hair. You are like Norwood 1.5 right now if including the thinning areas. For reference this is what a norwood 3 looks like, and as you can see you have a sh*t tonne more hair than this dude!

Op is your hair shorter in some pics? I feel like that’s what’s giving the illusion of less defbsity. Overall hair still looks the same man, gotta give 12-18 months or you’ll never know finasteride full effect.

Cheers for reply, honestly regret starting finasteride without researching and maybe waiting a bit more to see the speed that it would recede at but that's my fault. Do I take the dht test whilst on finasteride So if dht is high or normal whilst on finasteride that means it's having no affect

Reason I say nw3 is cos I can see thinning in that shape

I honestly think the finasteride has accelerated my loss
Ironically it happened to me but I don't think its happened to you. How is your libido? Is your skin oilier? Scalp itchy, etc?

Whilst I was shedding a fair bit - (every time I touched my hair some would come out, think it's calmed down now but a lot still falling) - noticed my libido went up there is a tingle on the left side aswell and noticed more spots on me

Hmm interesting. Keep up treatments for a year and then consider adding something new

worked out where my hair is thinning and where it isn't , my nw2 looks well weird- all the hair that formed my cow lick there is off. If it looked a bit more normal and was smaller I'd probably not bother w treating it, hopefully rogaine can save it.

My temple evaporated after starting RU which from all that I’ve read can usually have some positive benefit on the hairline. There are a decent collection of velus that will not grow terminal. Not sure what to do afraid Finasteride will add to he decline and even if there’s is regrowth or retention I’ll already go into noticeable diffuse NW3 territory.

Just out of curiosity, did you personally ever tried finasteride/dutasteride?

Edit: to OP: just make sure you get your info from people that actually tried finasteride and went through a shed. I get my best results on fina after 2years.

Do you even have male pattern baldness at all? I dont see anything thinning out, but that doesnt mean your not. Doesnt make sense to take finasteride for the fun of it unless you have some real serious obvious thinning going on that others can see pretty easily, but that is just my opinion.

He’s obviously has less hair on hairline and temples, not sure how you don’t see it.

Yh mate completely take your point I regret ever starting as it's not in my genes to go bald it was vanity and ignorance trying to keep thick nw1. My hairline is so thin now but my hair is really thick v tempted to stop as my hairline has only gotten thinner and I'm nearly 6 months innit my hair is really thick

My plan is to come off finasteride and then from me thinking that my hairloss wasn't even bad my hair should come back if not I'll try minoxidil to get it back in don't think I was badly losing my hair just maturing hairline and I panicked
