Hi, my name is Tim (not to be confused with Timi),
I have been using minoxidil 5% for 9 weeks now. I apply it from the center of my vertex down to the very front middle of my hairline (imagine drawing a line from the center of your vertex to the front middle of hairline), and also apply it to the right side of my hairline. The results have been very discouraging and i'm considering quitting. Overall. my hair is now thinner as I continue to shed, especially in the frontal region where i'm applying the minoxidil. I purposely did not apply the minoxidil on the left side of my hairline so I could compare the minoxidil (right side) applied region to the untouched (left side) hairline region. Now all I can really say is I pretty much no longer have a right side hairline (untouched left side now looks much better than right minoxidil side). Shouldn't the shedding have stopped by now? I am 9 weeks in to the treatment. I was on Finasteride very low dose for a while with some success in the frontal region but could not handle the sides. I read the next best think was minoxidil. So far it is destroying my hair and accelerating the male pattern baldness pattern! I think it is important to mention I have not had any irritating skin reactions to the minoxidil. Again, shouldn't my hairs be getting thicker by now? PLEASE advise!! Have a great day!

I have been on the foam for 3 months as of Friday. I've had an incredible amount of shedding 100-500 hairs a day for the last 10 weeks. I have just descided to take a week off on the Rogaine foam to see what will hapen.

I am starting to believe minoxidil( maybe more the alcohol in it) is not of great value for some. I started Promox a few weeks ago and my hair is shedding like crazy. Perfectly healthy hairs are shedding. My scalp is itchy too from the Retin-A. I apply the minoxidil down the middle too from the vertex and that is where my hair is the worst. I am seriously thinking about laying off the topicals or start to ween off them. I cannot handle the retin-a and the alcohol in Promox and any minoxidil with alcohol. I am starting to agree with Timi( the other Tim) that for some people minoxidil can make things worse.

Limitations of human occipital scalp hair follicle organ culture for studying the effects of minoxidil as a hair growth enhancer.Magerl M, Paus R, Farjo N, Müller-Röver S, Peters EM, Foitzik K, Tobin DJ.
Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford, UK.

Minoxidil induces new hair growth in approximately one-third of patients with androgenetic alopecia after 1 year of treatment. With several conflicting reports in the literature based on small-scale studies, the current study aimed to clarify whether organ culture of human scalp anagen VI hair follicles is a suitable in vitro test system for reproducing, and experimentally dissecting, the recognized in vivo hair-growth-promoting capacity of minoxidil. Hair shaft elongation was studied in terminal anagen VI hair follicles microdissected from the occipital scalp of 36 healthy adults. A total of 2300 hair follicles, approximately 65 per individual, were tested using modifications of a basic organ culture protocol. It is shown here that minoxidil does not significantly increase hair shaft elongation or the duration of anagen VI in ex vivo culture despite several enhancements on the conventional methodology. This disparity to what is seen clinically in minoxidil responders may be explained by the following: (i) use of occipital (rather than frontotemporal or vertex) hair follicles; (ii) use of, already maximally growing, anagen VI hair follicles; (iii) a predominance of hair follicles from minoxidil unresponsive-donors; (iv) use of minoxidil rather than its sulfate metabolite; and/or (v) use of a suboptimal minoxidil dosage. This disparity questions the usefulness of standard human hair follicle organ culture in minoxidil research. Unexpectedly, minoxidil even inhibited hair shaft elongation in the absence of insulin, which may indicate that the actual hair-growth-modulatory effects of minoxidil depend on the concomitant local presence/absence of other growth modulators

That's probably why Dr Proctor only uses a small percentage of minoxidil in Proxiphen. Minoxidil is not too beneficial at the front. I think it helps some in crown but very little at the hairline and down the middle anterior area. Minoxidil will help 1/3 of people who use it. I am not one of those people.

How can minoxidil make you bald even more? Are you applying it under your thinning hair or on an already bald spot?

Amarant, I have diffuse thinning only, no bald spots. I am applying it on my diffuse areas and those areas have become more diffuse in a very short time.

Now you're making me doubt too. Maybe we should all quit minoxidil, if it's making us go bald instead of growing hair? I have been using it for a year now almost, but I thought the thinning I got was natural, caused by my genes.

I went to my dermatologist and she says Propecia will not do anything for the frontal hairs. Minoxidil can only do so much. But she claims minoxidil should not make things worse. She hears plenty of men complain about Propecia and the hairline. She said people need to realize it really will not stop your frontal hairs from thinning. It only slows things down. I realize every wants it to cure baldness and stop it dead in its tracks but that will not happen.

I read that Regaine helps you hold the hair you already have too. It's all so strange and insecure in the world of hair loss.
