I'm a 56 year old man who has thinning in the crown. I'm taking saw palmetto three times a day. I am also taking rogaine. I'm afraid to take Propecia because of side effects. Can anybody make any recommendations on what I should do? Are hair transplants successful these days? Thank you.

I am trying to use Rogaine twice a day. I am also started to use DHT blocking shampoo. I would like to try for the hair transplant in my crown I would have to pay around 5 grand.

Men with prostate issues your age take 5mg of finasteride or Avodart and seem to do fine on it. Just pretend you have a prostate issue and you have to take only 1mg. Otherwise, try minoxidil and see if you can maintain on that but its not likely.

Its funny how my 67 year old dad is taking dutasteride for prostate problems. He has no idea its a hairloss medication nor idea what it actually does biologically speaking and probably takes it in the same vain as one would take antibiotics or other prescribed necessity by the doctor.

Did he grow some hair on it? I notice some men who take it have good hair.

Forget dht blocking shampoos. Stick with rogaine, don't stop unless 6 months in you notice no improvement. With propecia/finasteride I would recommend rolling the dice. The odds of side effects are low, the odds of those sides not resolving after stopping is way lower than that.

Thank you for the responses. I want to post a photo of the crown of my head how ever I can't seem to do it from my phone.

Is it okay to use Rogaine on the front of my hairline as well for precaution?

Not bad at all for 56 years old. And almost no gray hair. Lucky guy! You would do well with Propecia and minoxidil most likely. I would hold off on a transplant because you can conceal that with Toppik with no problem and look like no loss.

Thanks. I hope I can get it to fill in. It really bothers me. It looks worse with light.
Can you show the front with your full hairline exposed. Pull back the hair? What Norwood? I am estimating a NW3 based on your crown.

I am happy that I have my hair in front however the texture is changing because it's going gray and that kind of scares me.

I don't think so. He is like a NW2.5 so he never had much to regrow and his hairline has been this way for decades so its safe to say those follicles are long gone.

Looks to me like a NW2.5 close to NW3. Diffuse thinning in the forelock. You still have alot of hair to save. Unfortunately when the hair turns gray its emphasizes the thinning more. The gray hair diameters are smaller than the pigmented one.

What can I do to make it thick again? Could a hair transplant help with diffused thinning?

I have to learn the terminology such as words like Norwood, and NW2.5 and NW3...

You really have to be careful transplanting in between native hair as you can have permanent shock loss and replace native hair with transplant hairs and gain no density. Secondly, you should take Propecia now to see if you can reverse some of your loss and at the same time it will protect you from possible permanent shock loss in the future if you do get a hair transplant. You have better than average hair for your age so think about that too. I am going to meet with a rep from Follica tomorrow. It might be a newer solution for a diffuse thinner like yourself. I would try to hold off on a transplant as a last resort. You are making it a first line of treatment and I don't think that is a wise choice at this point.

I will make an appointment to try to get Propecia from my doctor next week. I just worry because I'm susceptible to depression and I heard that could cause it in certain types of people.

Trust me, if you start regrowing your hair, you won't be depressed. If you do nothing and let it continue to get worse, you will be depressed. Don't anticipate the worst. I have faith it will work out fine for you. Give it a try. Remember again alot of men have prostate issues around your age and have to take a much stronger dose.
