maintenance v regrowth

Hi all,
long time lurker, but infreuquent poster, as I find most of my questions and queries are raised and and answered by someone else. From the perspective of gathering quantitative information, this forum is absolutely fantastic, even taking into account admin's warning about data v opinion.

I have found that the stories of others, successful or otherwise, have enabled me to formulate a regime which so far, I believe, has had positive results.

One question however, that I have not found an answer to (and yes, I've tried search function n00b) is the difference between minoxidil and finasterade once hair has regrown. From my understanding, minoxidil is to regrow hair, whereas finasterade is to maintain.

So, once minoxidil has regrown hair to an acceptable level, will the use of finasterade alone maintain the level of regrown hair? Or will the continued use of minoxidil be required to keep the newly grown hair?

Obviously I ask this as it will be a lot easier to take one tablet a day, and be easier on the hip pocket.

Thanks in advance,
hh

I've asked this similar question some time ago on another forum, and I was answered that you cannot replace minoxidil with finasteride after regrowth to maintain the regrowth. I was told that the hairs you regrew will fall out after quitting minoxidil, because they are depending on it. Something like that.

I don't really get it though, I just took it as the truth. If someone can explain this in a better way, please do so :)

Hi there, I have tried this and confirm that you cannot maintain hair grown by minoxidil with finasteride only.

I just got off minoxidil in nov-dec last year while still on finasteride and then for a month it was all good not much shed, but then in Jan i underwent a huge shed and then a pull back a bit in feb-march probably because I still use finasteride.

However, the little difference I felt with minoxidil did not return. I want to wait till end of may when I will be completing 1 yr on finpecia and then note any difference.

know how it goes... :jackit:

Whoop and icdalite, thanks for the serious answers. If it means I have to use both, then I gladly will!!

Yeah, unfortunately to keep minoxidil gains you've got to keep using minoxidil. It'd be nice if finasteride would be the magic bullet but it definitely isn't. Obama's removing the ban on federal caps to stem cell research, so here's hoping for a cure soon!

...or at least by 2025. :sobbing:
