I am not asking for medical advice, but as a 25 year old with hip length hair, with no family history of balding... i was pretty devastated to realize that I had lost a significant amount of hair. (50%) I quite honestly feel like there are many components in my life that may have contributed to the loss, but at the same time I am new to all of this. My question to veteran posters is this: How can I find a dermatologist that specializes in hair loss? There are way too many stories of people going from doctor to doctor & getting labs after labs to no avail. Is there some resource out there that gives lists or suggests dermatologists that specialize IN HAIR LOSS? I know that it could end up that I need to see an endo, or perhaps another kind of specialist, but i don't want to go somewhere that will just turn the other cheek. I realize that I'm just another patient to a doctor, and I get it really. Anyone here knows what it feels like.. the emotional impact of hair loss. I need someone who is actually going to care and look into options, ideas.. etc etc. Any advice welcome. Thank you so much.

p.s. I realize now that it thinned over a few yrs, (2 maybe?) and the texture has changed as well. Very brittle, more fine individual hairs, easily tangled & matted.

I suggest you start with an endochronlogist and a regular dermatologist for a few reasons. I think you should rule out anything medical or even fungal...AND these DR will be on your insurance plan if yo have insurance and all the blood work and even if the Derm does a biopsy (painless) you will have all those reports.

Dermatologist who really specialize in hair loss in my experience are rarely covered by insurance...and these guy/girls really know their stuff more than other places...So if it turns out to be no medical finding and you have to see a specialist who you have to pay out of pocket you will at least have all the reports and tests for them to look over...this is what happened with my the specialist looked at my blood work from my endo and spotted my low ferritin which she did not spot...so he sent me home with a prescription for a shampoo and a recommendation for an iron supplement.

As for finding a Derm who specializes in hair most of them are Hair Transplant Dr and yo have to make sure by website and by calling that they are 'diagnostics' and if they treat 'medical' hair loss because it does not sound like you have Androgenetic Alopecia or will need a transplant..it sounds like you have something causing your hair loss either fungus or nutrient deficient etc which is why you will need all this testing.

Finding a specialist just be wary and do a little research once you have a few names..google the names and 'reviews' and scour the blogs for what people thought of them etc. Also you may want to see if they are active in research meaning they are keeping up with the times..Hair loos treatments are evolving constantly so you want to try and find someone who is up on research, writing paper/published, went to good schools, etc.

But like i said i think you would be better to start with an endchronlogist and regular dermatologist to get all the tests paid for..IF they are stumped then go to a specialist you will have to pay for with all your tests.

I hope any of this helps. Good luck!
