Just got back from the dermatologist and let me just tell you.. what a waste of time and money.

At first he followed the expected procedure and inquired if there was any history of baldness in my familly.

Then he just asked looked at my hair and said " you do have such thin hair, but it seems to be something you were born with"

He literaly just touched the hair and looked at it for 20 seconds and proceeded to prescribing me something called cestadine. :!:

He also wrote me a percription for propecia and stated that I could take it in intervals. 4 months, then 2 months of interval.

He also told me that he was sure that I wouldn't go bald before my thirties because I did not start loosing my hair at an earlier age. From what I have read, this is not correct at all.

what do you guys make of this?

I've never heard of "cestadine" -- is that the correct spelling? I would take Propecia continuously (i.e. not in intervals). Hair loss, as your doctor should know works differently in different people; for some, the loss is slow and gradual, and, for others, the hairs recede as fast as the French army during WWII.

I would say my situation is the second. It has really been progressing at a very rapid rate. Not so much in terms of hairloss, but the thinning.

Hop on the Propecia bandwagon, then.

Yep, sure will. Going to have a hair cut and I'll start on it tomorrow.

What is the average price of propecia?

And are there different dosages? I mean, a 4mg and a 1mg pack?

Search on this site. You'll find taking and splitting Proscar is much cheaper.

Which means you might want to go back to your derm and get a different prescription. (Convince him they're the same; they are.) But it also means your health insurance might pick it up.

Ive said it before, most Doctors are pretty useless these days. With falling application rates for good medical schools ( due somewhat to the intrigue and $$$ of technical fields for top students ) and the vast amount of foreign doctors with degrees from 3rd world countries - we can expect the trend of clueless private practice doctors to continue.

Almost anything you would need to see a doctor for ( except writing the prescription ) you can find out on the net. Your best bet is to do your own research, then try not to roll your eyes too bad when your Doctor explains things half wrong or tells you outright false facts while he writes your script.
