Is This Early Stages Of Male Pattern Baldness?

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum. I'm posting, because I worry that I might be suffering from early stages of MBP. I am 27 years old, and I started noticing a bit of recession on the temples around 6 months ago, and a few weeks ago I discovered what I believe is a sign of thinning around a 'cowlick' on the crown of my head.

My friends and family think that I'm overreacting and obsessing for no reason, as they don't believe that I'm balding in any way. My barber told me the same thing, but I'm really unsure about it.

My father and my paternal grandfather both have full heads of hair, but my maternal grandfather was probably a norwood 4 at the end of his life.

I'd love to hear your opinions regarding my hair 'situation'. Do you think that it looks like early stages of male pattern baldness? Are my temples receding, and do you think that I'm thinning on top, or is it just a cowlick. I apologise for the poor-ish quality of the photos. If you can't tell anything from them, please let me know, and I'll see if I can take some better ones.

Thanks a lot for your replies.

But do you really not see any balding or receding at all? I really just want to be absolutely sure. If there are any real signs, I'd rather start using minoxidil/finasteride to be proactive.

I’m in a kinda similar situation where all I want is to KNOW if I’m balding so I can take precautions, but looking at these pictures you are fine man. If it’s bothering you keep taking monthly pictures and get a dermatologist appointment or something like that. Since we are both in similar situations I hope that you also don’t contract BDD like I did.

Yeah, I think I might match a few of the characteristics of BDD.

But what do you think, Dr. House? Do you see any balding/receding? :)

I started treatment when my hair looked like yours. I was 39 at that time. Depends on your family history. My dad was balding at 17 big time. I would say you are definitely receding but very slight. Your crown was like mine and it got thinner as I aged. You really can't use me for comparison since mine started later in life.

I'll politely disagree with you doctor house. I think that's a natural swirl. Of course one cannot know when male pattern baldness might kick-start,but for now his crown has a textbook cowlick. His hairline also is very straight. There's slight recession on the right temple but I can definitely say that it must be like that since quite some time and hasn't budged. Left temple is properly angled and looks great.

Never said his crown was balding. I said mine looked like his but then it thinned out. He does have slight recession at the right temple. If you look at almost everyone's photo on here. You will see mostly everyone recedes more on the right than the left temple.

if I was your friend id punch you. but I think it would be really stupid to use finasteride. also your genetics seem to be good. so PLEASE don't get on any meds at least rn just monitor month to month for a while.

Maybe you do have a tiny bit of recession. Even then id honestly just wait, and take pictures next year to compare. There is no rush because once you start treatment your in it for life whether you needed it or not. I would wait until you see a small bald spot, and your absolutely sure before taking action. You have plenty of time.

Thanks for the answers. Sounds like there might be a slight bit of recession. Could it just be a 'mature' hairline?

Don't think I'll start medication right away.

in my opinion your hair looks great, but i would get some kind of hair specialist since you seemed worked up about it

Here's a better photo of my crown. I think it looks a bit suspicious. Don't you guys think it seems to be the beginning of balding? Or is it really just a cowlick?
