Is taking Minoxidil necessary when already taking Nizoral?

I recently started taking 1.25% finasteride and have been taking Nizoral thrice weekly for about a month or so. Would adding Minoxidil be repetitive, or help me along? I'm asking because finasteride and nizoral is expensive, and adding Min might put too much of a dent in my wallet.

If it will improve results quicker, I'll do it though.

"Absolutely" isn't a word around these parts.

Minoxidil doesn't do the same thing as Nizoral; it is not repetitive.

I think u should add minoxidil if you arent seeing any regrowth with finasteride. Some people start to respond well when they add minoxidil...but then again there is no definite answer here...it may benefit u or it may not.

is this true? i've heard on this forum that nizoral is as effective, if not more so, than minoxidil...though i've also heard the three work the best when in conjunction with each other

Nizoral was intended for use of fungal and scalp infections that may benefit against dandruff and other scalp related problems. Its use was not intended for hairloss. However its believed bacteria feeding sebum on the scalp and inflammation can contribute to hairloss which nizoral can help prevent happening. According to a small study however it was found that nizoral grew just as much hair as 2% minoxidil suggesting it may have stimulant effect. Furthermore its believed nizoral may be a weak androgen blocker (dht blocker) which can aid in treating hairloss.

Now considering these to be truths which i believe. It may be beneficial to add this in with minoxidil because at least your gauranteed to easilly get full coverage of your scalp to stimulant regrowth with such applications. You see you would need a lot of minoxidil get all areas of your scalp for this effect but thats not the case with nizoral. Dont however replace minoxidil with nizoral unless your minoxidil is weak (2%), as most minoxidil's used by men for male pattern baldness is 5% strength or more so minoxidil is generally more powerfull for treating hairloss. The idea of using nizoral therfore is to get them areas of the scalp you cant get without using too much minoxidil. The idea of using minoxidil (5%) is to strengthen them results in the areas most effected by male pattern baldness. Furthermore nizoral may be needed to prevent inflammation brought on by conventional minoxidil, which could limit regrowth.

In short in response to your question, yes minoxidil (5% or more only) will improve your results quicker. If moneys a problem pick minoxidil over nizoral as it is a more effective hairloss treatment out of the two.

Okay thanks, that makes a lot of sense...would private brand 5% work (i.e. Life Brand, Equate, etc.) or should I pay more for Rogaine Foam. My hair is fairly short so I'm going for effectiveness.

I dont know what you mean about private brand and life brand. I do know the foam is worth getting if you have a sensitive scalp and cant tollerate conventional minoxidil i.e. regaine or rogain (alcohol and ppg based solutions) and still want the benefits minoxidil gives.

The foam from what i gather from various users is a little less effective than standard minoxidil but still effective for treating hairloss.

I use kirklands minoxidil 5%. Its pretty much the same as standard rogaine or regaine only its under a different brand name. You can get it very cheap on ebay or some other site like minoxidil direct or agestop. I got 3 bottles for £18 with free delivery.

Follicle84 explained the difference b/w minoxidil, finasteride and nizoral very well.

In laymen's term:

nizoral - creates a good scalp environment for hair to grow (and may block dht)
finasteride - if you want to keep or maintain what you have; possibility of some regrowth
minoxidil - just regrowth; but you'll have to continue use of minoxidil once you start or all the hair you gained will fall out as the hairs become minoxidil dependent

I started off with Rogaine foam and had good results. It was easy to apply and easy on everyday life as it dried very quickly.

I am now on Kirkland 5% liquid and it is a bit greasy. The worst thing is trying to make your hair look somewhat descent in the morning when going to work without it looking like you just gelled it.

The foam is more expensive but easier to use....Kirkland is cheaper, slightly more of an inconvenience in the morning.

Hope that helps.

Yes, its necessary.

If you want regrowth that is!

finasteride is more fore maintaing (sometimes can create some improvement), minoxidil more for regrowth, and keto (effective ingredient in nizoral) is a good extra for your scalp, and it blocks a little dht.

And yes you have to keep using minoxidil, but thats the case with all hair products (finasteride, keto, laser, etc).

Well, I'm kinda perturbed that I'd need to keep using Minoxidil all my life. Is there a way I can perhaps use it less if I experience more growth, or will it always need to be once or twice per day?

I've really grown accustomed to keeping my hair buzzed for maintenance so I suppose it won't affect my look as much, but it's still a hassle.

Yeah well just try it, if you see an improvement and you think its worth the ´hassle´, keep using.

Evaluate after a couple of months!

Just try it, then you can at least say youve tried it and wont have any regrets after.
