You should be fine taking it at 21, I went to my doctor at 19 about hair loss and he said it was fine just by looking at it but I lost quite a lot of density over 2 years in the temples and got on finasteride at 21.

Great, I'll try to get my hands on it, by the way, do you think I can see regrowth in my temples if I start taking them right now?
Finasteride is different for everyone. Some people get massive regrowth, some maintain their hair and some still lose hair. I've been on it for nearly a year and it looks like it has maintained my hair so far. I started on 1mg and have no side effects.

My doctor seems to think I'm not balding although I believe I am. How safe is taking Finasteride as a 21yo as prevention?
Impossible question to answer. For some (apparently) there are no side. For some including myself there are very bad side effects. It also works well for some, or not at all for others.

Everyone's different so it's initially a gamble, but it's a gamble worth taking for some people. It's not a gamble worth taking for others in my opinion -

The issue with taking for prevention - if you do take for a few months, then have side effects, stopping it might actually kick start male pattern baldness as your literally messing with your hormones. Starting and stopping anti DHT meds or minoxidil for that matter is not a good idea imo. Once your on it your on it for life - the words of a reputable hair transplant doctor.

Whatever anyone says about finasteride it's function is to force a change in hormone production, and as everyone on the planet is different it WILL give everyone a slightly different result. Some great, some nothing, and some bad.

Well,i took It at 21,8 months ago.

I was told by some users that i had bdd,"you are nw1,not balding",not taking into account my family history. My 33yo Brother is a NW3A,my dad had diffuse thinning.

I was told by some Low iq apes as well that taking finasteride as a prevention would accelerate the process and make my hair worse, and f*** up my hormones.

Funny thing they didnt show me scientific evidence, sources or any data,so they were probably fear moggering me without any embasament.

Unless you have the balding gene, I wouldn't take it until you have some miniaturization starting.

Irregular hairline = balding

Yeah thought so, f*** the family doctor that said it's "normal" by just running her fingers through my temples. Funny thing is that I did the checkup 2 years ago. Thankfully I took pictures 2 years ago and I don't see much of a difference, but it's better to be safe than sorry, specially since I'm a bit older now.

This was on Summer 2020

Not necessarily, but it does make your balding more obvious

@DoctorHouse you seem like the wisest in here, do you recommend me asking the doctor for Proscar 5mg and split the pill in 4 (1.25mg) or do you think anything above 1mg is too risky to get side effects? Or is the 0.25mg too small to do anything negative.
You would be fine with Proscar 5mg and split it into 4 or 5 doses. 1mg vs 1.25mg is not going to make a huge difference.

Yeah I think it's something along the lines of a 1% difference in DHT reduction, so no big deal there

I doubt that's what will happen. Stopping Finasteride will just make the body go to its regular hormonal levels, it won't magically increase DHT more than it was before Finasteride.

Also, I'm not shedding but I do have thin hairs on my temples and temple peaks, now, I don't know if this is my natural hairline or not (I can't confirm with an actual specialist because I need a referal for a dermatologist and my family doctor said it was normal by just running her fingers through my temples lol), I have been monitoring my temples for 2 years and I don't see a difference but I do believe I'll further bald in the future as literally almost all males in my family are bald (father, brother, cousins, uncles, maternal grandfather was fully bald at his early-30s).

What truly worries me is:
a) I don't know if I've stopped growing (facially, heigh, frame/clavicles) and I don't if finasteride would f*** that up.
b) Getting gyno, I never had gyno (i think) but I don't know if I could develop it

I could give less of a sh*t about the sexual side effects really, I don't care if my penis dies, I doubt I would use it if I was bald, except for masturbating like a coomer.

Doubt whatever you want, I'm just passing on the experiences from people from that I've read over the last 20 years on this and many other hairloss forums. Countless people stopping and starting finasteride and dutasteride and being far worse off.

If your not worried about sexual side effects then take it and don't stop taking it. I've never heard it stunting growth, especially at 21 years old.
