I'm Female But Need Help Finding Cause Of Thinning

Was just wondering how you find out the cause of hair thinning. I posted in the female section but have had no response. Been dealing with continuous thinning for a year now and don't know what to do. Sick of seeing my very long hair all over the floor. My hairline is ridiculous and I'm starting to feel horrible whenever I see my reflection. I have horrid dark circles and look extremely unhealthy. Don't feel like this is a coincidence.

Get you thyroid checked. Are the sides of your head affected? Do you eat well enough?

Thank you for replying. I have had my TSH levels checked and they were normal. The whole of my hairline is affected, including the sides. The most notable part though, is the very centre of the front and my parting, mainly towards the crown. It's uneven too which doesn't help.

I believe I eat well. I try to get my 5 a day, eat plenty of fibre. I've recently upped my meat intake as I have low Ferritin (although within range).

I also have thinning body hair. I have had hormones tested, liver function etc and all normal. I just want to find the cause to hopefully halt or even reverse it.

If your body hair is affected too, it's more than likely to be some kind of nutrient deficiency. Vitamin D maybe?
If it is caused by lack of nutrients it should grow back as soon as you solve the issue.

Thank you. I do have vitamin d supplements at home.

Is there any particular 'professional' who can help me figure out the cause? I've been to my GP twice about it but as my tests are normal it's as though I just have to get on with it.

I hate washing my hair, brushing my hair and seeing my hair on my floor in the house. This is completely new to me and it's making me insanely stressed.

My hair has become really greasy too, which I suspect is due to not having my thick hair to mop up the oils anymore. I feel absolutely disgusting and wish I could just stay in bed all day. I can't stand the not knowing. Neither of my parents have a receding hairline. If it was Female Pattern Hair loss at least I could try Minoxidil, but I don't want to use it if it's not going to work.

I think you're right about the oiliness. Maybe you should get a blood test before taking supplements to make sure you need them.

It definitely doesn't sound like female pattern hair loss by the way you're describing it, maybe it's stress related?
For anything related to hair, you should see a dermatologist. Minoxidil should help no matter the cause, it is a growth stimulant.

Ah that's good to hear I thought it was solely for female pattern hair loss.

I did originally think stress as I had a relationship breakdown early last year and am now a single parent with mental health issues.

Thank you I might see if I can get referred to a dermatologist. I also have adult acne so they could possibly help me with both.

Thank you very much for responding to me.

Stress can cause difuse hair loss, have you scalp hair thin or thick? Problems with sebum are linked to thin hair. Pure jojoba oil as lotion in the night can aid with it (also for acne).
A lot of luck

My scalp hair is thin now, a year ago it was lovely and thick.

I did read somewhere that there could be a link between oil and thinning hair. I've never had oily hair until this past few weeks though, however I do have oily skin. I've had oily skin for a little over 3 years now.

I'm terrified to use any type of product on my face although I do use topical retinoids.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

Try taking oral spironolactone if you haven't already.

I've never even be offered spironolactone, however I have read it works by suppressing testosterone or something and I've been told I have low testosterone, so not sure if it would work for me.

Suppose it would be worth a try but not sure if I can just go to my GP and ask them for a certain type of medication. Are you allowed to do that?

I use prescribed topical retinoids for my adult acne. If I didn't I'd be covered in painful spots. I don't like using additional products as my face gets really oily from anything. Even Cetaphil moisturiser which is water based and apparently acne sufferers swear by it.

Retinoids are harsh meds, but don´t worry,
Please try pure jojoba oil with a few drops of a good geranium essential oil in your face in the night.... You'll see.
